Job description

Role Overview

The Senior Technical Engineer is a site‑based technical role within the Technical Office department responsible for producing, reviewing, and governing all structural shop drawings, technical submittals, RFIs, CVIs, and structural BIM models. BIM is a mandatory working tool for this role; all structural shop drawings must be produced from and traceable to the Revit Structure model, and all project files must be managed through the Common Data Environment (CDE) in compliance with ISO 19650 and the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP). The engineer coordinates with the BIM Manager and BIM Coordinator to ensure that structural technical requirements are properly reflected in the BIM workflow and project digital deliverables.

He/she provides structural technical input to support BIM coordination, model development, clash review, and construction‑stage coordination. The engineer reviews BIM‑generated outputs from a structural and constructability perspective—including coordinated plans, sections, details, schedules, and 3‑D views where required—and ensures that structural shop drawings extracted from BIM models are technically correct, coordinated with site requirements, and aligned with the latest approved information. Additionally, the engineer supports the resolution of coordination issues identified through BIM reviews, attends BIM coordination meetings when structural decisions, constructability matters, or technical clarifications are required, and ensures that structural team comments and decisions are properly communicated to the BIM team for model updates.

Other key responsibilities include coordinating with subcontractors and specialist suppliers to ensure their BIM‑related inputs are aligned with the approved structural design, shop drawings, material submittals, and site execution requirements; supporting the BIM Manager in validating that structural deliverables are aligned with the project’s BIM execution requirements, and using BIM outputs as a coordination and decision‑support tool to improve technical clarity, reduce site conflicts, and support timely approvals.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the structural technical office team, including senior structural BIM modelers and draftsmen; distribute tasks, monitor productivity, and ensure deliverables are submitted according to project priorities and approved schedules.
  • Review structural technical outputs before submission to the Technical Office Manager, consultant, or client; act as the first escalation point for structural technical issues before escalation to the Technical Office Manager.
  • Prepare deliverable trackers, submission logs, RFI logs, drawing registers, and team progress reports.
  • Support the Technical Office Manager in planning, workload forecasting, technical strategy, and resource allocation; ensure that structural deliverables are aligned with the project baseline programme, procurement schedule, construction sequence, and site priorities.
  • Mentor senior structural staff and support the development of team technical capabilities.
Coordination with Consultants, Subcontractors, and Internal Teams
  • Lead structural coordination meetings with consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams.
  • Coordinate with architectural and MEP teams to resolve interdisciplinary conflicts.
  • Coordinate with the QS commercial team for quantity verification, variation assessment, and change management.
  • Coordinate with the planning team to align technical deliverables with construction priorities and look‑ahead programmes.
  • Coordinate with the QA/QC team to ensure approved drawings, materials, mock‑ups, inspection requirements, and method statements are properly aligned.
  • Coordinate with authority engineers or consultants where structural approvals or local‑authority submissions are required.
  • Ensure all structural technical decisions are properly documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
RFIs, CVIs, Variations and Technical Clarifications
  • Lead the preparation and review of structural RFIs, CVIs, technical queries, and clarification of sketches.
  • Ensure RFIs are technically clear, contractually traceable, and supported with sketches, references, and recommended solutions where required.
  • Follow up with consultants and client representatives to obtain timely responses, assess replies, and ensure required updates are reflected in shop drawings, BIM models, procurement documents, and site instructions.
  • Support the commercial QS team in identifying and substantiating architectural variations.
  • Review drawing changes, specification changes, and site instructions to determine technical cost and time impact.
  • Maintain proper records of RFIs, CVIs, drawing revisions, approvals, and change‑related correspondence.
CDE Compliance
  • Ensure all structural submissions are properly prepared, reviewed, numbered, and issued through the approved project CDE such as Asite, Aconex, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or any client‑mandated platform.
  • Maintain drawing registers, revision logs, submission trackers, approval status logs, and technical correspondence records.
  • Enforce proper naming conventions, revision control, document metadata, and approval workflows.
  • Ensure superseded drawings and documents are properly controlled to avoid site execution based on outdated information.
Site Technical Support
  • Provide technical support to site engineers and construction teams during execution.
  • Resolve structural site issues related to drawings, details, and coordination with other trades.
  • Conduct site visits to verify technical compliance with approved shop drawings and specifications.
  • Assist in resolving NCRs, site observations, consultant comments, and quality‑related architectural issues.
  • Ensure that the latest approved drawings and technical documents are available to the site team.
  • Monitor structural work progress from a technical perspective and highlight risks that may impact approvals, procurement, or construction progress.
Professional Skills and Qualities
  • Strong leadership and team‑management capability.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills; ability to manage pressure, deadlines, consultant comments, and site priorities.
  • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills; ability to mentor and develop architects and technical staff.
  • Strong reporting, documentation, and follow‑up skills.
  • Commercial awareness related to variations, procurement, quantities, and cost impact; ability to negotiate technical solutions with consultants and subcontractors.
  • High accountability, ownership, and attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  2. Autodesk Revit Structure certification – preferred.
  3. ISO 19650 Foundation or Practitioner accreditation – preferred.
Minimum Experience
  • 8‑12 years of experience in structural technical office roles with main contractors.
  • Minimum 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in structural shop drawings, consultant coordination, and CDE document control within the UAE/GCC.
  • Proven hands‑on experience in Autodesk Revit Structure (LOD300–400), Navisworks Manage, and Autodesk ACC/BIM360/Aconex on projects of AED100M+ contract value is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience in high‑rise RC structures, PT slab systems, transfer structures, deep foundations, and core wall systems.
  • Candidates who list Revit or BIM only in a skills section without technical office BIM governance evidence in their career history will not be shortlisted.
Technical Competencies
  • Expert proficiency – mandatory: Autodesk Revit Structure (construction‑stage modelling, LOD300–400), Navisworks Manage (clash detection and BCF management), Autodesk ACC/BIM360 (CDE governance, document control, and model coordination).
  • Advanced proficiency: AutoCAD (structural detailing and 2‑D drawing production), Tekla Structures (advantageous for rebar and steel connection detailing).
  • CDE platform proficiency: Autodesk ACC/BIM360, Aconex, Asite, or equivalent – mandatory for document submission workflows and approval tracking.
  • Comprehensive knowledge: ISO19650‑1 and ‑2, BEP governance, LOD matrix, CDE naming conventions, BCF issue management, IFC data exchange, and COBie data requirements.
  • Expert structural engineering knowledge: reinforced concrete design, PT slab systems, rebar detailing, formwork and sequencing, PT stressing procedures, and transfer structure design.
  • Strong understanding of UAE structural codes, IFC drawings, specifications, BOQs, schedules, and contract documents.
  • Strong RFI/CVI management, design discrepancy identification, and technical solution development from a technical office perspective.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel for trackers and logs, Word for technical letters, Outlook for formal correspondence).
Managerial and Soft Skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – ability to prepare technically precise RFIs, submittal cover letters, technical assessments, and coordination meeting minutes.
  • High attention to detail and documentation discipline – zero tolerance for un‑tracked revisions, unapproved drawings on site, or missing submittal records.
  • Strong problem‑solving and technical decision‑making skills with the ability to identify structural coordination risks early and propose solutions before they impact the programme.
  • Ability to manage multiple deliverable workstreams simultaneously – shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, BIM updates, and CDE document control – under programme pressure.
  • Commercial awareness related to structural variations, procurement lead times, material cost implications, and programme impact of design changes.
  • Strong follow‑up and escalation discipline – ability to track consultant responses, submittal approvals, and RFI turnaround times and escalated proactively when deadlines are at risk.
