The position provides engineering judgment on equipment selection, design, maintenance, refurbishment, repair, modification, and replacement while helping projects and operating assets manage technical risk and equipment reliability. The engineer works closely with project teams, operations, maintenance personnel, OEMs, vendors, contractors, and engineering disciplines to resolve complex machinery issues and improve equipment availability. The role also supports long-term overhaul planning, critical spare strategies, predictive diagnostics, and lifecycle cost optimization for major rotating assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist engineering support for major rotating equipment during concept development, FEED, detailed engineering, EPC execution, factory testing, installation, commissioning, and start-up.
- Review rotating equipment selection, design requirements, technical specifications, vendor documentation, and engineering deliverables.
- Provide technical authority guidance for compressors, gas turbines, steam turbines, pumps, drivers, auxiliaries, and associated mechanical systems.
- Support project teams in resolving equipment-related technical issues that could affect safety, reliability, operability, schedule, or lifecycle cost.
- Work with operations and maintenance teams to investigate chronic machinery problems and recurring equipment failures.
- Lead or contribute to troubleshooting of vibration, performance deterioration, mechanical degradation, seal problems, bearing issues, and other rotating equipment abnormalities.
- Develop technically justified recommendations for repair, refurbishment, modification, upgrade, or replacement of critical machinery.
- Support major maintenance activities, equipment overhauls, inspections, repairs, and restoration of rotating assets.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of rotating equipment engineering standards, specifications, procedures, and maintenance practices.
- Review existing maintenance strategies and recommend adjustments based on equipment criticality, operating history, reliability data, and failure mechanisms.
- Support preparation and optimisation of five-year overhaul and inspection plans for major rotating equipment.
- Coordinate planned overhaul requirements with operations, maintenance, engineering, procurement, and project functions.
- Contribute technical input to CAPEX forecasts and long-term investment planning for rotating equipment replacements, upgrades, and major refurbishment programmes.
- Evaluate equipment lifecycle costs to support balanced decisions between capital investment, maintenance expenditure, reliability, and operational risk.
- Develop and review refurbishment strategies for insurance spares, repairable equipment, and high-value rotating machinery components.
- Assess the condition and future suitability of stored or repaired strategic spares before return to service.
- Work with OEMs and specialist repair vendors to establish technically suitable repair scopes, acceptance criteria, and quality requirements.
- Support deployment of predictive maintenance technologies, condition monitoring systems, analytics platforms, and advanced diagnostic tools.
- Use operating and condition data to identify early indications of machinery degradation and potential reliability risks.
- Participate in performance analysis of rotating equipment and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, availability, and operating stability.
- Review technical studies relating to machinery performance, equipment upgrades, debottlenecking, modifications, and replacement alternatives.
- Provide risk-based technical decisions when acting as a technical authority or subject matter expert.
- Ensure engineering recommendations comply with approved company standards, international codes, OEM requirements, and applicable industry practices.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, operations, maintenance, and project stakeholders to achieve timely resolution of technical matters.
- Support technical evaluations of equipment packages, spare parts, repair services, and specialist rotating equipment contracts.
- Capture lessons learned from equipment failures, major maintenance activities, and project execution to improve future engineering and maintenance decisions.
- Promote the practical use of digital technologies and predictive analytics to improve asset reliability and reduce unnecessary maintenance expenditure.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant project engineering experience within the oil and gas industry.
- Strong technical background in major rotating machinery including compressors, turbines, pumps, drivers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Experience supporting rotating equipment across FEED, EPC, construction, commissioning, start-up, and operational phases.
- Practical knowledge of maintenance, troubleshooting, overhaul, refurbishment, and repair of critical rotating equipment.
- Experience analysing chronic equipment problems and developing sustainable reliability improvement solutions.
- Familiarity with international rotating equipment codes, engineering standards, OEM requirements, and industry practices.
- Ability to evaluate machinery risk and make technically sound decisions when acting in a technical authority capacity.
- Understanding of lifecycle cost evaluation, CAPEX planning, OPEX optimization, and long-term equipment strategies.
- Experience developing or reviewing major overhaul plans and inspection schedules for critical rotating assets.
- Familiarity with condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, machinery analytics, and diagnostic technologies.
