Job summary

Petrofac is a leading international service provider to the energy industry, delivering design, build, manage and maintain solutions. Petrofac seeks a Senior Engineer – Quality (EIT) to lead electrical QC activities on large EPC projects in the UAE.

You will assess qualifications and oversee cable, switchgear, transformer, and cable tray inspections. The role requires meticulous testing, IEC standard adherence, and hands-on site supervision.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as Electrical QC Inspector.
  • Experience in oil & gas / petrochemical industry.
  • Experience with major EPC contractors (at least 3 years).
  • Hazardous area inspections: IEC 60079-17/14 training recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cable glanding training and qualify personnel.
  • Review and approve qualification certificates for cable jointers/terminators.
  • Inspect temporary electrical works and camp connections.
  • Witness insulation resistance and hi-pot tests on cables and busbars.
  • Oversee final alignment, torquing, and testing of switchgear and transformers.
  • Monitor safety, testing, and compliance with IEC standards during installation.

JOB TITLE:Senior Engineer – Quality (EIT)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct cable glanding training, assess and approve cable glanding/termination personnel qualification.
  • Review and approve cable jointer/terminator qualification certificates.
  • Inspection/testing of temporary electrical works, connections to camp facilities as and when required.
  • Inspect installation of supports prior to cable tray installation.
  • Inspection of cable tray/conduit installation prior to release for cable laying.
  • Inspect cable trench for dimensions and sand bedding prior to cable laying and prior to release each layer of cables.
  • Monitor cable jointing/termination process to ensure manufacturer’s recommendations are followed.
  • Inspect cable segregation arrangement etc prior to back filling/release.
  • Witness Insulation Resistance/continuity test of cables on the drum, after laying, prior to trench back filling and after termination.
  • Witness Hi-pot test of cables.
  • Inspect/witness final torquing of the cable termination.
  • Inspect installation of cable tray cover.
  • Surveillance during installation of equipment at substation to ensure manufacturer’s recommendations are followed.
  • Monitor preservation activities of switch gears, transformers, bus ducts and other equipment.
  • Inspection of switch gear installation for alignment, location etc.
  • Witness torquing of bus bar joints and doctor test.
  • Witness IR test of bus bar.
  • Witness Hi-pot test of bus bar wherever applicable.
  • Witness various testing of switchgears including IR, Hi-pot, ductor, operational etc.
  • Witness Transformer oil dielectric test.
  • Witness IR test of transformer.
  • Witness various electrical tests as per applicable ITP/vendor docs.
  • Final inspection of transformers, Switchgears, MCCs and other equipment’s.
  • Inspect installation of Bus duct.
  • Witness torquing, ductor/IR test of bus duct.
  • Inspect batteries, chargers and UPS. Where applicable, witness charging/discharging test of batteries.
  • Inspect underground earth cable installation, cad weld joints etc prior to trench back filling.
  • Inspect installation of earth electrode and earthing system.
  • Witness earth resistance test of individual electrodes and earthing network.
  • Witness earth loop resistance/continuity test.
  • Inspection of lightning protection system of each building.
  • Final inspection of earthing system.
  • Inspect location of each lighting fixtures, socket out lets, junction boxes with respect to type/application.
  • Inspect site routed lighting cable tray installation and release for cable laying.
  • Inspect installation of distribution boards.
  • Witness IR test of distribution boards.
  • Witness IR/continuity test of lighting circuits.
  • Witness functional test of each lighting circuits, where applicable only.
  • Witness illumination level test, where applicable only.
  • Monitor preservation activities of motors throughout project period.
  • Inspect installation of motors including glanding termination, earthing.
  • Witness IR test and /or polarization index test etc as applicable.
  • Inspect installation of local control stations.
  • Witness functional test from local control station to Substation, if applicable.
  • Witness motor solo run test (2hrs for LV motors and 4 hrs for MV/HV motors), if applicable.
  • Inspect thermite welding on top of UG pipe and witness continuity test of cables.
  • Inspect installation of temporary magnesium anode, reference electrode, anode ribbon, crossings.
  • Witness various inspection/testing related to CP system prior to backfilling and after back filling.
  • Inspect installation of CP transformer/rectifier.
  • Inspect installation of heat tracing circuits and associated components.
  • Witness testing of heat tracing circuits prior to insulation and after cladding.
  • Witness inspection and tests related to equipment such as diesel generators, HVAC equipment etc.
  • Witness inspection/testing related to overhead power distribution/transmission lines.
  • Perform initial detailed inspection of certified electrical equipment based on latest IEC 60079-17 table 1,2,3 and IEC 60079-14, or perform visual or close inspection as applicable.
  • Correct interpretation of equipment labels, IP Rating etc.
  • Verify IP Rating is maintained.
  • Conduct tubing/tube fitting installation training, assess and approve instrument tube fitter personnel qualification.
  • Inspect each instrument against data sheet prior to release to site for installation.
  • Witness calibration of each instrument as required by ITP/specifications.
  • Witness calibration of safety valves.
  • Witness calibration and seat leakage test of control valves.
  • Monitor preservation requirements of instruments and control panels.
  • Inspect installation of Instruments including glanding termination of cables.
  • Inspect installation/hook up and pressure test of impulse tubing.
  • Witness pressure test of impulse tubes.
  • Inspect installation of air supply/signal lines.
  • Witness pressure/leak testing of air supply/signal lines.
  • Witness inspection/test related to analyser houses.
  • Verify completion of heat tracing for impulse tubes.
  • Inspect installation of supports prior to cable tray installation.
  • Inspection of cable tray/conduit installation prior to release for cable laying.
  • Inspect cable trench for sand bedding prior to cable laying and release each layer.
  • Witness IR/continuity test of cables on the drum, prior to back filling trench, after glanding and termination.
  • Inspect cable segregation arrangement etc prior to back filling.
  • Inspect installation of cable tray cover if reqd.
  • Inspect control room building prior to installation of panels.
  • Surveillance during installation of equipment at control room to ensure manufacturer’s recommendations are followed.
  • Inspect installation of various control panels, consoles, desks etc.
  • Inspect internal cable tray works prior to installation of cables.
  • Inspect installation of various cables including system cables.
  • Witness testing of all cables.
  • Monitor preservation requirements of communication equipment and control panels.
  • Conduct cable glanding training, assess and approve cable glanding/termination personnel qualification.
  • Review and approve F.O cable technician’s qualification certificates.
  • Inspect installation of communication equipment including glanding termination of cables.
  • Inspect installation of supports prior to cable tray installation.
  • Inspection of cable tray/conduit installation prior to release for cable laying.
  • Inspect cable trench for sand bedding prior to cable laying and release each layer.
  • Witness IR/continuity test of telecom copper cables on the drum, prior to back filling trench, after glanding and termination.
  • Inspect cable segregation arrangement etc prior to back filling.
  • Witness testing of fiber optic cables testing prior to installation, prior to trench back filling and final test.
  • Witness communication cable testing
  • Witness testing of communication system
  • Inspect installation of cable tray cover if reqd.
  • Inspect control room building prior to installation of panels.
  • Surveillance during installation of equipment at control room to ensure manufacturer’s recommendations are followed.
  • Inspect installation of various control panels, consoles, desks etc.
  • Inspect internal cable tray works prior to installation of cables.
  • Inspect installation of various cables including system cables.
  • Witness testing of all cables.
  • Inspect termination of cables in each panel.
  • Inspect instrument earthing of panels, cables etc.
  • Monitor pest control activities inside control building.
  • Inspection and testing of the PA/GA circuits, CCTV components, telephone units, exchange, and other systems as applicable.
  • Inspect location, mounting height of JB’s Local panels against drawings.
  • Inspect wiring inside each JB’s and local panels.
  • Witness testing of control panels.
  • Inspect installation of various types of antennas and radio tower/mast.
  • Perform initial detailed inspection of certified electrical equipment based on latest IEC 60079-17 table 1,2,3 and IEC 60079-14, or perform visual or close inspection as applicable.
  • Correct interpretation of equipment labels, IP Rating etc.
  • Verify IP Rating is maintained.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as Electrical QC Inspector.
  • Should have experience in oil & gas/Petrochemical industry.
  • Should have previously worked with major EPC contractors (At least three years).
  • For Hazardous Area Electrical Inspections: Should be an experienced person whose training has included instructions on various types of protection and installation practices, IEC 60079-17 and IEC 60079-14. (Evidence of relevant experience and training claimed shall be documented and available). If no such training attended, he should undergo in-house training: PEC-RCD-00384, prior to assigning any Ex-Inspections.
