Job summary

SEHA Health System in Abu Dhabi seeks a Consultant in Pediatric Surgery to lead specialized pediatric care, perform elective and emergency procedures, and guide multidisciplinary teams in a high-quality, education-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Basic medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Post-qualification certification in ABS/FRCSC/CCST/FRACP.
• Current and in good standing medical license to practice.
• Experience in pediatric surgery and related subspecialties.

Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, and manage congenital and acquired pediatric surgical conditions.
• Perform elective and emergency pediatric surgical procedures.
• Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and nurses.
• Provide preoperative assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
• Deliver perioperative and postoperative care and monitor recovery.
• Participate in multidisciplinary clinics, case discussions, audits, and research.
• Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and junior staff.

Summary

The Pediatric Surgery Consultant provides specialist diagnosis, surgical treatment, and long-term management of conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents. The role involves performing elective and emergency surgical procedures, managing complex pediatric surgical conditions, and providing preoperative and postoperative care. The consultant works closely with pediatric specialists and multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, patient-focused care while also contributing to clinical education, research, and quality improvement initiatives. Urology experience and Arabic speaker is an advantage.

Experience:

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
• Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
• Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.

License:

• Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess, diagnose, and manage congenital and acquired surgical conditions in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
• Perform comprehensive clinical examinations and interpret diagnostic investigations, including laboratory tests, X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI.
• Perform elective and emergency pediatric surgical procedures within the consultant’s area of expertise.
• Diagnose and manage congenital anomalies affecting the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal wall, chest, and other organ systems.
• Manage common and complex pediatric surgical conditions, including appendicitis, hernias, intestinal disorders, tumors, trauma, infections, and neonatal surgical emergencies.
• Provide preoperative assessments and develop individualized surgical and treatment plans.
• Deliver perioperative and postoperative care, monitoring patients for complications and supporting recovery.
• Perform minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical procedures where appropriate and within the scope of practice.
• Collaborate with neonatologists, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, radiologists, oncologists, nurses, and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
• Participate in multidisciplinary clinics and case discussions involving complex pediatric surgical conditions.
• Provide emergency surgical consultations and timely management of acute pediatric surgical cases.
• Communicate diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, and postoperative care plans clearly to patients’ families and caregivers.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation, operative reports, discharge summaries, and patient records.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, research, and the development of pediatric surgery protocols.
• Supervise, mentor, and train residents, fellows, and junior medical staff.
• Participate in departmental meetings, teaching activities, and continuing professional development.
• Comply with hospital policies, patient safety requirements, ethical standards, and infection prevention protocols.
