Job summary

Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, and surgically manage congenital and acquired cardiac conditions in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.

• Develop treatment plans with multidisciplinary teams.
• Deliver perioperative and postoperative care and ICU management.
• Supervise residents and junior staff.

Summary

The Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Consultant provides specialist surgical care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart conditions. The role involves diagnosing and surgically treating complex cardiac abnormalities, managing patients before and after surgery, and working closely with pediatric cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists. The specialty also includes the management of selected patients with congenital heart disease beyond childhood

Education/Qualification:

  • USA: American Board of Surgery (ABS) – Cardiac Surgery
  • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Cardiac Surgery Surgery (FRCSC)
  • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Cardiac Surgery
  • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Cardiac Surgery (FRACP)

Experience:

• Minimum of two (2)years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT) Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden OR Switzerland,
• Sub-Specialties: Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or the UK.
• Minimum of five (5)years of experience after obtaining the main specialty qualification in United Kingdom (CESR) Portugal, Spain, or Italy.
• Sub-Specialties: Minimum of four (4) years of experience after obtaining the sub-specialty qualification in Portugal, Spain, or Italy.

License:

• Current and in a Good Standing Medical License to practice in country of residence.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess, diagnose, and surgically manage congenital and acquired cardiac conditions in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
• Review and interpret diagnostic investigations, including echocardiograms, cardiac catheterization studies, CT scans, MRI, and other relevant imaging.
• Perform elective and emergency pediatric and congenital cardiac surgical procedures.
• Manage a wide range of congenital heart defects, including septal defects, complex cyanotic heart disease, valve abnormalities, and other structural cardiac conditions.
• Develop individualized surgical and treatment plans in collaboration with pediatric cardiologists and multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide preoperative assessment and surgical planning for patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
• Deliver perioperative and postoperative care, including the management of critically ill patients in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
• Monitor patients for postoperative complications and provide ongoing follow-up care.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex congenital heart disease cases and determine appropriate treatment strategies.
• Work closely with pediatric cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Participate in the management of neonatal and emergency congenital cardiac conditions requiring urgent surgical intervention.
• Provide consultation and support for patients requiring mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal life support, or cardiac transplantation when applicable to the scope of practice.
• Communicate diagnoses, surgical options, potential risks, and expected outcomes clearly to patients’ families and caregivers.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation, operative reports, treatment plans, and patient records.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, research, and the development of pediatric cardiac surgery protocols.
• Supervise and train residents, fellows, and junior medical staff.
• Participate in departmental teaching, professional development, and multidisciplinary educational activities.
• Comply with hospital policies, patient safety requirements, ethical standards, and infection prevention protocols.
