Job summary

Role Context

The Instrument Technician will provide hands-on maintenance support for instrumentation, process monitoring, control, and protective systems used across plant operations. The role covers routine servicing, emergency repairs, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, shutdown support, and system modifications. Reliable instrumentation is essential to maintaining stable plant operation, protecting equipment, and preventing unexpected process trips. The technician will therefore verify completed work carefully, monitor developing faults, and maintain control equipment in accordance with approved standards and plant procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out routine and preventive maintenance of process instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Perform corrective repairs according to approved work requests, work orders, Standard Operating Procedures, and maintenance standards.
  • Test completed instrumentation work to confirm equipment operates according to required parameters.
  • Complete maintenance activity sheets and supporting documentation after each assigned task.
  • Participate in scheduled preventive maintenance programs across plant instrumentation systems.
  • Support planned plant shutdown activities and complete assigned maintenance tasks within approved schedules.
  • Perform emergency maintenance during unscheduled plant or equipment shutdowns.
  • Inspect assigned plant areas regularly and identify developing instrumentation or control problems.
  • Report abnormal equipment behavior, deteriorating performance, and potential failures before they affect operations.
  • Troubleshoot process control instruments and associated control systems.
  • Repair and calibrate field instrumentation to maintain required accuracy and reliability.
  • Test various types of process monitoring and control instruments after calibration or repair.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain relay logic systems used for plant control and protection.
  • Verify instrumentation systems remain consistent with intended design and operating philosophy.
  • Perform maintenance on plant protective instrumentation where assigned.
  • Support reliable equipment operation by reducing the risk of unforeseen process trips.
  • Carry out field modifications to control elements according to approved plant change requests.
  • Modify control loops where required under authorized management of change procedures.
  • Assist with system-level changes involving plant instrumentation and control interfaces.
  • Update or support revision of plant drawings following approved field modifications.
  • Ensure revised drawings accurately reflect installed instrumentation and control changes.
  • Assist with upgrading existing instruments to newer control technologies.
  • Support retrofitting of new instruments into existing field panels.
  • Assist with modifications to instrumentation installed within the main control room.
  • Verify that retrofit and upgrade work complies with applicable plant standards.
  • Support completion of Plant Change Requests associated with instrumentation modifications.
  • Use appropriate calibration and testing equipment during maintenance activities.
  • Maintain instrumentation tools and test devices in serviceable condition.
  • Follow applicable maintenance, operating, HSE, and technical procedures throughout assigned work.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and operations personnel before performing work on active process systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of testing, repairs, calibration, modifications, and equipment condition.
Ideal Profile

The position requires a Technical Diploma or a Secondary School Certificate supported by a vocational trade certificate in a relevant instrumentation, electrical, control, or technical discipline. Candidates should have at least 4 years of relevant experience in instrumentation maintenance, process control systems, industrial plant maintenance, or a closely related technical field. Practical experience troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and testing process control instruments is essential. Candidates should understand preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, plant shutdown activities, relay logic, control loops, field instrumentation, and protective equipment. The successful candidate should be comfortable working with plant change requests, control system modifications, equipment retrofits, and technical drawing updates.
