Role Context The Highway Design Engineer contributes to the technical development of road and transportation schemes by converting planning requirements, survey information, engineering constraints, and authority standards into coordinated design solutions. The position supports senior engineers while taking ownership of assigned design packages, calculations, drawings, corridor models, quantities, and technical documentation. Accurate coordination with drainage, utilities, structures, traffic, lighting, landscape, ITS, and BIM teams is essential to avoiding design conflicts and maintaining efficient project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop highway geometric designs through concept, preliminary, and detailed design stages.
- Prepare horizontal alignments, vertical profiles, cross sections, grading layouts, and road corridor models.
- Produce engineering calculations, quantities, design reports, technical notes, and supporting documentation.
- Generate design drawings in accordance with project BIM, CAD, document control, and presentation standards.
- Interpret survey data and incorporate topographical conditions, existing infrastructure, and physical constraints into proposed highway designs.
- Coordinate highway layouts with drainage, structures, traffic engineering, utilities, lighting, landscape, ITS, and BIM disciplines.
- Support utility coordination by identifying potential clashes and contributing to practical engineering resolutions.
- Assist with option studies and Value Engineering assessments to compare technical, construction, and cost implications.
- Participate in road safety reviews, design risk assessments, and interdisciplinary technical checks.
- Respond to design review comments and incorporate approved changes accurately within project deliverables.
- Support authority submissions and prepare documentation required for review by organizations such as RTA, Dubai Municipality, DEWA, and relevant utility authorities.
- Deliver assigned work packages in line with agreed schedules, project budgets, and technical requirements.
- Perform detailed self-checking of drawings, calculations, models, quantities, and reports before formal submission.
- Maintain accurate revision control and ensure current design information is available to the wider project team.
- Participate in client coordination meetings, technical workshops, and project presentations when required.
- Assist construction-stage teams by responding to technical queries, providing design clarifications, and participating in site visits where necessary.
- Apply AECOM quality procedures throughout design development and documentation.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering.
- 4-8 years of professional experience in highway, road, or transportation infrastructure design.
- Previous involvement in UAE infrastructure projects is preferred.
- Experience supporting RTA or comparable transport authority projects would be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of highway geometric design, grading, road corridor modelling, and earthworks.
- Practical knowledge of pavement layouts, utility interfaces, quantity estimation, and technical reporting.
- Ability to interpret survey information and identify design constraints before they affect later project stages.
- Working knowledge of AASHTO requirements, RTA Road Design Standards, Dubai Municipality requirements, and local utility authority standards.
- Comfortable working within multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating design interfaces.
- Strong analytical ability with attention to dimensional accuracy and technical detail.
- Able to organize design tasks effectively and deliver work within established programme requirements.
- Capable of responding constructively to technical reviews and incorporating revisions without compromising design consistency.
- Familiarity with BIM-based design and collaborative digital delivery workflows is desirable.
