Job summary

NPR is seeking an engineering leader to oversee a data engineering team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You will mentor engineers, drive scalable data infrastructure, and coordinate with product, analytics, and editorial stakeholders to deliver impactful data-powered products.

Responsibilities include recruitment, onboarding, and aligning data pipelines with business goals, while ensuring security and reliability across distributed systems.

• Lead technical planning, scoping, and execution using Agile ceremonies
• Conduct software design and code reviews to maintain architectural integrity and security
• Implement engineering workflow improvements and automation to optimize developer experience
• Oversee response to critical production bugs or infrastructure incidents
• Coordinate workflows and deliverables for external contributors and vendors

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience managing or leading data engineers in an agile organization
• Prior experience as an individual contributor shipping code for large-scale data applications
• Experience with GCP, AWS, or similar cloud platforms
• Experience managing high availability, distributed, and fault-tolerant applications
• Proficiency in SQL and at least one general-purpose language like Python
• Hands-on experience with modern version control systems like Git
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing both internal employees and external agency vendors
• Experience implementing and maintaining data lakes, warehouses, and ingestion pipelines
• Experience with Salesforce, BigQuery, and Looker
• Experience with audience segmentation or marketing data infrastructure at scale
