Role Context

The Construction Superintendent provides frontline leadership between project strategy and physical fabrication execution. The position converts engineering requirements, construction priorities, schedules, and available resources into coordinated field activities while maintaining control over safety, quality, productivity, and workforce performance. Success requires more than supervising daily construction. The Superintendent must anticipate constraints, coordinate upcoming work across disciplines, allocate personnel according to the four-week execution outlook, and remove technical or operational barriers before they affect project milestones. Decisions made in this role directly influence labor productivity, fabrication progress, resource efficiency, subcontractor performance, HSE outcomes, and overall project delivery. The Superintendent is therefore expected to maintain a clear understanding of project priorities while ensuring field teams operate within established policies, budgets, procedures, and construction plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct fabrication construction activities in accordance with approved drawings, project specifications, execution plans, schedules, and company procedures.
  • Translate project milestones into practical construction priorities for supervisors, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Management and Engineering to align construction sequencing with engineering deliverables and site requirements.
  • Interface with all relevant project disciplines to establish common execution targets and eliminate conflicting work priorities.
  • Participate actively in multidisciplinary planning discussions covering upcoming construction activities.
  • Review the four-week look-ahead plan and determine the workforce required to execute scheduled work efficiently.
  • Assign personnel according to workload, priorities, construction sequence, and productivity expectations.
  • Develop and manage manpower loading requirements to support targeted productivity levels.
  • Monitor actual progress against planned construction output and intervene when performance begins to deviate from established targets.
  • Identify technical, operational, workforce, material, or organizational constraints that could affect fabrication progress.
  • Coordinate corrective measures before constraints develop into significant schedule delays.
  • Maintain effective utilization of labor, equipment, construction areas, and available materials.
  • Coordinate material requirements with relevant procurement, logistics, warehouse, and project functions to support uninterrupted execution.
  • Verify that equipment is available and appropriately allocated for planned construction activities.
  • Maintain strong field leadership and ensure supervisors understand daily and near-term priorities.
  • Enforce comprehensive HSE requirements throughout fabrication and construction activities.
  • Promote safe work execution and actively support the objective of maintaining a zero-incident workplace.
  • Verify that construction personnel understand applicable safety procedures, work controls, and individual responsibilities.
  • Intervene when unsafe conditions, behaviors, or execution practices are identified.
  • Coordinate with HSE personnel to address field observations and maintain appropriate preventive controls.
  • Ensure fabrication and construction work complies with project quality requirements, applicable codes, specifications, and approved procedures.
  • Work with Quality teams to address inspections, nonconformities, corrective actions, and construction quality concerns.
  • Monitor workmanship and ensure completed activities satisfy required technical standards before progression to subsequent stages.
  • Supervise subcontractor execution and measure performance against contractual, schedule, HSE, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate vendors involved in fabrication or construction activities and ensure their deliverables support project priorities.
  • Address subcontractor performance gaps through timely communication and appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintain accurate construction documentation covering progress, workforce deployment, activities, constraints, and field performance.
  • Provide timely and reliable progress information to Project Management and other stakeholders.
  • Support construction reporting with accurate information from the field rather than relying solely on planned progress.
  • Lead implementation and enforcement of McDermott policies and procedures within assigned construction operations.
  • Verify compliance with established company requirements and address deviations appropriately.
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibilities and authority for implementing applicable policies and procedures.
  • Confirm that mandatory training requirements are completed by both the Superintendent and assigned team members.
  • Coach supervisors and construction personnel to strengthen technical execution and field leadership capability.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across construction teams.
  • Promote effective communication between engineering, construction, quality, HSE, planning, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Support resolution of complex construction problems through structured evaluation and coordination with appropriate technical disciplines.
  • Adapt construction execution plans when project conditions, resource availability, or operational priorities change.
  • Maintain leadership visibility across fabrication areas and regularly verify that planned systems and controls are functioning in practice.
  • Support extended working hours or shift arrangements where required by project execution priorities.
Ideal Profile

The preferred candidate holds a Bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline. Advanced construction, project, or industry-specific certifications are desirable. A substantial career background in the EPCI industry is essential, including significant leadership responsibility for fabrication construction projects. The role requires deep practical understanding of modern fabrication methods, construction execution principles, workforce planning, field productivity, and the technical standards used across major EPCI projects. Candidates should have proven experience directing diverse construction teams while coordinating with engineering, planning, HSE, quality, procurement, subcontractors, vendors, and project management. Strong HSE leadership is essential. Experience implementing and managing occupational health and safety systems within demanding construction environments is expected, while relevant HSE certifications are advantageous. The successful candidate should be comfortable making operational decisions where safety, schedule, quality, cost, workforce availability, and project priorities must all be considered simultaneously. Strong communication and stakeholder management capability is required, including the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, technical specialists, and senior project leadership. The position also demands resilience and structured problem solving. Fabrication projects can involve rapidly changing constraints, competing discipline requirements, and resource challenges that require timely field-level decisions. Candidates must be adaptable to project requirements, including work across different geographic locations, extended working hours, or shift-based schedules when necessary.
