Job summary

talabat is seeking a Data Governance Engineer to own governance across the organisation, defining what secure and compliant means, and driving policy decisions. You’ll use AI tools while maintaining human oversight for policy and escalations.

You’ll lead data discovery, security and access control, data quality, and compliance initiatives, partnering with Finance, Operations, Product, and Engineering to create a single source of truth for metrics.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in data governance, data modelling, data quality, or compliance in regulated or fast-moving environments.
• Understand RBAC, access control models, data classification, and security best practices as lived experience.
• Fluent in SQL and data modeling; able to read and critique semantic layers (LookML, BigQuery).
• Articulate trade-offs between strict access control and enabling velocity; write findings for technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain comprehensive data catalogs with machine-readable semantic layers for humans and AI.
• Ensure critical data assets have current, trustworthy documentation and are rapidly searchable.
• Own the discovery outcome: comprehensively cataloged assets accessible without friction.
• Design and operate Role-Based Access Control frameworks that keep data segregated by region and compliance zone.
• Monitor access requests, identify patterns, and make governance calls on standard requests independently.
• Escalate complex conflicts but own most access decisions; prevent unauthorized access incidents.
• Work with domain leaders to build reusable data quality frameworks and monitoring tools.
• Establish global quality scores across freshness, consistency, and reliability.
• Partner with teams to resolve quality issues; ensure critical datasets meet standards.
• Align practices with DAMA/DMBOK and ISO standards; perform maturity assessments and close gaps.
