Job summary

DP World is seeking an accomplished technical leader to oversee the dangerous goods fleet maintenance, compliance, and lifecycle strategy. The role focuses on safeguarding asset integrity, improving safety and cost-efficiency in DG transport across operations.

You will drive statutory compliance, engage with OEMs and regulators, and lead continuous improvement initiatives leveraging digitisation to support group objectives.

Qualifications

  • Honours degree (NQF Level 8) is required.
  • Up to 8 years of experience in a similar environment with strong leadership.
  • Experience in dangerous goods transport is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance of the dangerous goods tanker fleet with legislation and standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for safe operation and lifecycle management.
  • Develop tanker maintenance, inspection and certification programmes for statutory compliance.
  • Optimise maintenance strategies, workshop capability and technical standards.
  • Engage with manufacturers, testers and suppliers on technical matters, warranties and recalls.
  • Manage SLAs and KPIs for maintenance and testing providers.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records including maintenance history and certificates.
  • Provide specialist guidance on tanker specifications, regulatory compliance and safe practices.
  • Conduct due diligence on fleet assets during acquisitions and CAPEX decisions.
  • Advise operating companies on investment decisions and asset disposal strategies.
  • Support safety, reliability and efficiency in dangerous goods transport operations.
  • Engage with industry bodies to stay current on legislation and technology.
  • Lead development of technical capability through training and workforce planning.

Job Function

To provide specialist technical leadership for the organisation’s dangerous goods fleet maintenance, tyres and workshops by ensuring full compliance with all applicable hazardous materials transport legislation, inspection standards and maintenance requirements. The role is responsible for safeguarding the integrity, safety and regulatory compliance of fleet assets through effective governance, audit oversight, technical strategy and lifecycle management, while optimising fleet performance, managing risk exposure and supporting the business in achieving safe, efficient and cost-effective dangerous goods transport operations. Responsible for continuous improvement initiatives and optimal use of advances in digitisation and technology in support of group initiatives.

Key performance areas:
  • Ensure full compliance of the dangerous goods tanker fleet with all applicable legislation, standards and regulatory requirements governing the transport of hazardous materials, including tanker design, inspection, testing and maintenance.
  • Provide technical leadership and specialist oversight for the safe operation, integrity and lifecycle management of the dangerous goods tanker fleet.
  • Develop and implement tanker maintenance, inspection and certification programmes to ensure statutory compliance, including tank testing, pressure inspections, and recertification requirements. Establish and manage internal technical audit programmes to ensure workshops, maintenance providers and fleet operations comply with dangerous goods transport legislation and company policies.
  • Develop and implement the medium-term technical strategy for the tanker fleet, incorporating asset lifecycle management, fleet replacement planning, environmental considerations and total cost of ownership optimisation.
  • Optimise tanker fleet maintenance strategies, workshop capability and technical standards to ensure safe and efficient maintenance of specialised dangerous goods equipment.
  • Engage with tanker manufacturers, OEMs, testing authorities and specialist suppliers on technical matters including product performance, safety standards, engineering modifications, warranties and recalls.
  • Manage supplier service level agreements (SLAs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) for specialised tanker maintenance and testing providers through structured performance monitoring and contract management.
  • Maintain accurate tanker fleet asset records including maintenance history, statutory inspection certificates, compliance documentation and technical performance data.
  • Provide specialist technical guidance to operating companies on tanker specifications, regulatory compliance, maintenance standards and safe operational practices.
  • Conduct technical due diligence on fleet assets during acquisitions and major capital investments to ensure compliance with dangerous goods transport regulations.
  • Advise operating companies on tanker fleet capital investment decisions including specification development, AFE motivations, acquisition planning and asset disposal strategies.
  • Support operating companies in improving fleet safety, reliability, compliance performance and operational efficiency in dangerous goods transport operations.
  • Engage with logistics industry forums, regulatory bodies and technical committees to remain current on legislative developments, industry standards and emerging technologies in hazardous goods transport.
  • Lead the development of technical capability within the organisation through training coordination, workforce planning and the promotion of a strong safety and compliance culture.

Skills and experience required:
  • Up to 8 years of experience in a similar environment with at least 5 years operational leadership or specialist experience. Experience in the dangerous goods transport sector will be advantageous.
