Job summary
Network Engineering in Soweto, Gauteng, invites a Solar Design Engineer to lead the design and technical development of solar PV systems from feasibility to commissioning. Qualifications
- Electrical engineering degree or equivalent required.
- Experience in solar PV design for commercial, industrial or utility-scale projects.
- Strong AutoCAD skills and proficiency with PV design software.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop commercial, industrial and utility-scale solar PV systems.
- Develop grid-tied, hybrid and off-grid solar solutions.
- Produce detailed PV layouts, electrical drawings and engineering documentation.
- Develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), string layouts, inverter layouts and cable routing.
- Perform system sizing, load assessments, energy-yield calculations and shading analysis.
- Conduct solar simulations using PVsyst, PV*Sol, HelioScope or similar software.
- Select PV modules, inverters, mounting structures, protection equipment and other BOS components.
- Perform DC and AC cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations, earthing and protection calculations.
- Assist with the design and integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Conduct technical site assessments and collect information required for project design.
- Prepare BOQs, equipment schedules, technical specifications and tender documentation.
- Develop preliminary designs and technical proposals.
- Review project requirements and optimise designs for technical performance and cost.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.
- Assist with troubleshooting and system optimisation.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable South African electrical regulations, NRS requirements, SANS standards and municipal requirements.
