Job summary

Placements24 is assisting a respected chemical R&D firm in Mahikeng, North West, to recruit a Senior Synthetic Organic Chemist. You will design, execute, and optimize multi-step syntheses of novel organic molecules for pharma, materials, and agrochemicals, in a state-of-the-art laboratory.

You will purify and characterize compounds using chromatography and NMR, MS, and IR, troubleshoot challenges, and document results.

Qualifications

• PhD in Organic Chemistry or closely related field.
• 5+ years postdoctoral or industry experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
• Proven ability to design and execute challenging organic syntheses.
• Hands-on experience with diverse organic reactions and techniques.
• Proficiency with NMR, MS, and IR for compound characterization.
• Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, and retrosynthesis.
• Experience with chromatography and purification techniques (column, HPLC).
• Excellent problem-solving and meticulous experimental approach.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute complex multi-step synthetic routes for novel organic molecules.
• Optimize conditions to improve yield, purity, and efficiency.
• Purify synthesized compounds using chromatography and recrystallization.
• Characterize synthesized compounds using spectroscopic methods (NMR, MS, IR) and other analyses.
• Troubleshoot synthetic challenges and develop innovative solutions.
• Maintain detailed lab notebooks and document results.
• Collaborate with chemists, biologists, and researchers to meet project goals.
• Stay informed about advances in synthetic organic chemistry and related fields.
• Assist in developing and implementing new synthetic methodologies.
• Ensure adherence to lab safety protocols.
