About the Role

Our client, a leading innovator in solar energy solutions, is seeking a highly proficient and creative Senior Solar PV Design Engineer to join their esteemed engineering team. This is a fully remote opportunity, enabling you to contribute your expertise from anywhere in South Africa . You will be responsible for the end-to-end design of utility-scale, commercial, and residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, from conceptualization to detailed engineering packages. The role demands a deep understanding of PV system components, electrical design principles, structural considerations, and relevant South African building codes and regulations. You will collaborate with project developers, construction teams, and clients to ensure optimal system performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness. This remote-first position requires a proactive and detail-oriented engineer capable of working independently while ensuring seamless integration with project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Develop detailed electrical and structural designs for solar PV systems, including single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and layout plans. Perform site assessments and analyze solar resource data to optimize system design and energy yield. Conduct performance simulations and energy production modeling using industry-standard software (e.g., PVSyst, Helioscope). Select appropriate PV modules, inverters, mounting structures, and balance-of-system components. Ensure designs comply with South African National Standards (SANS), municipal bylaws, and electrical safety regulations. Prepare technical specifications, Bill of Quantities (BoQ), and construction documentation. Provide technical support during the procurement, construction, and commissioning phases. Review designs submitted by third-party engineers and contractors. Collaborate effectively with project managers, clients, and installation teams in a remote setting. Stay updated on the latest PV technologies, design tools, and industry best practices.

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. A minimum of 7 years of experience specifically in the design and engineering of solar PV systems. Proficiency in solar design software such as PVSyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD, and SketchUp. Strong understanding of electrical principles, AC/DC power systems, and grid interconnection requirements. Familiarity with South African building codes, SANS standards, and electrical regulations (e.g., OHS Act). Experience with various PV mounting systems and tracker technologies. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a remote work environment. Professional registration (e.g., Pr.Eng., Pr.Tech.Eng.) with ECSA is highly desirable.
