Job summary

PLACEMENTS24 in Mahikeng, North West, is seeking a Senior Process Development Chemist to lead scale-up of chemical synthesis processes from lab to full production, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

You will collaborate with R&D, engineering, and production to translate discoveries into robust manufacturing, optimize kinetics and mass transfer, and mentor junior chemists and engineers in process development.

Qualifications

• MSc or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum 6 years in process chemistry or chemical process development.
• Expertise in optimization, scale-up and technology transfer.
• Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
• Knowledge of process safety principles and hazard analysis (HAZOP).
• Experience with unit operations: reaction, distillation, filtration, drying.
• DoE and process modeling is highly desirable.
• Excellent problem-solving and hands-on development approach.
• Strong written and verbal communication; cgMP experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and optimization of synthesis processes for scale-up.
• Design experiments to evaluate kinetics, thermodynamics, and mass transfer.
• Identify and mitigate process safety hazards and ensure compliance.
• Develop process control strategies for efficient manufacturing.
• Troubleshoot deviations and implement corrective actions.
• Collaborate with engineering to design and commission new equipment.
• Prepare batch records and standard operating procedures.
• Conduct techno-economic assessments of new processes.
• Mentor junior chemists and engineers in development activities.
