Placements24 in Soweto, Gauteng, is seeking a Senior Automotive Powertrain Calibration Engineer to optimize engine performance, emissions, and drivability through advanced ECU calibration. The role blends hands-on testing with strategy development in a hybrid work setting.

You will lead calibration projects, collaborate with design teams, and mentor junior engineers while staying abreast of regulatory changes and new powertrain technologies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in automotive powertrain calibration.
• Deep knowledge of internal combustion engine operation, thermodynamics, and combustion.
• Proficiency with calibration tools such as INCA, CANape, MATLAB/Simulink.
• Experience with engine dynamometers and vehicle testing procedures.
• Strong understanding of emissions regulations.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
• Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment.
• Familiarity with hybrid and electric powertrains is an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement calibration strategies for engine control units (ECUs) to optimize performance, fuel economy, emissions, and drivability.
• Utilize industry-standard calibration tools (e.g., INCA, CANape, ETAS) to modify and validate ECU parameters.
• Conduct real-world vehicle testing and dynamometer testing to assess and refine powertrain performance.
• Analyze engine performance data, emissions data, and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to identify areas for improvement.
• Collaborate with engine design and development teams to ensure calibration requirements are met.
• Create and maintain calibration documentation, including strategy descriptions, parameter lists, and test reports.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in engine technology, emission regulations, and calibration methodologies.
• Troubleshoot powertrain calibration issues and implement effective solutions.
• Mentor junior calibration engineers and share expertise within the team.
• Contribute to the development and validation of new engine control software features.
