Placements24 is assisting a prominent mining house in Bloemfontein, Free State, in recruiting a Senior Mining Operations Manager to lead all mining activities in the region. The role demands extensive technical leadership, strategic vision, and a track record of improving safety, efficiency and profitability.

You will oversee multi-disciplinary teams, manage large-scale operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement across underground and open-pit environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
• Minimum 12 years progressive mining operations experience.
• Experience in underground and open-pit environments preferred.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA highly desirable.
• Strong leadership, communication and safety management skills.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client, a prominent mining house with operations across South Africa, is seeking a highly accomplished Senior Mining Operations Manager to lead their operations in the Bloemfontein, Free State region. This executive-level position holds ultimate responsibility for the safe, efficient, and profitable execution of all mining activities within the designated area. The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of technical expertise, leadership acumen, and strategic vision, with a proven track record of managing complex mining operations and driving continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of day-to-day mining operations, ensuring adherence to safety, environmental, and production targets.
• Develop and implement strategic operational plans to optimize resource utilization and maximize profitability.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of mining professionals, including mine supervisors, engineers, and frontline workers.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant South African mining legislation, regulations, and company policies.
• Manage operational budgets, control costs, and identify opportunities for efficiency gains.
• Foster a strong safety culture throughout the operation, implementing robust health and safety management systems.
• Collaborate with other departments, including maintenance, metallurgy, and exploration, to ensure integrated operational success.
• Oversee the effective deployment and maintenance of mining equipment and technology.
• Represent the company in interactions with stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, local communities, and industry associations.
• Drive innovation and the adoption of best practices to enhance operational performance and sustainability.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in mining operations, with at least 5 years in a senior management or supervisory role.
• Proven experience managing large-scale mining operations, preferably including both underground and open-pit environments.
• Strong understanding of mining methods, equipment, geology, and mineral processing.
• Expertise in mine safety management systems and South African mining regulations.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, control costs, and achieve financial targets.
• Experience in stakeholder engagement and community relations.
• Ability to think strategically and implement operational improvements effectively.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA is highly desirable.
