About the Role

Our client, a significant contributor to the mining sector, is seeking an experienced Senior Metallurgist to join their processing facility in Mossel Bay, Western Cape. This role is essential for optimizing the mineral processing operations, ensuring maximum recovery and product quality while minimizing costs and environmental impact. You will be responsible for leading process development, troubleshooting operational challenges, and implementing innovative solutions. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of metallurgical principles, extensive experience with various processing techniques, and a proven track record of improving plant performance. This is a vital position that requires analytical rigor, hands-on expertise, and strong leadership skills to drive excellence in a key area of the mining value chain.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and optimize all aspects of mineral processing operations, including crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, and refining.
• Conduct laboratory and pilot-scale test work to evaluate new processes and improve existing ones.
• Analyze plant performance data, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions.
• Troubleshoot operational issues and provide technical solutions to maintain plant efficiency and product quality.
• Develop and implement process control strategies to optimize metallurgical recovery and grade.
• Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations in all processing activities.
• Mentor and guide junior metallurgists and plant operators.
• Collaborate with geological and engineering teams to ensure effective resource utilization.
• Manage consumables and reagent usage to control operating costs.
• Stay updated on the latest advancements in metallurgical technology and best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in mineral processing and metallurgy, preferably within base metals or precious metals.
• Demonstrated expertise in flotation, leaching, or other relevant hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in statistical analysis.
• Experience with metallurgical accounting and process simulation software (e.g., METSIM, JKSimMet).
• Knowledge of laboratory analytical techniques and equipment.
• Excellent leadership and team management capabilities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a plant environment, potentially including some time in Mossel Bay operational areas.
• Understanding of South African mining industry standards and regulations.
