Job summary

Placements24 partners with a leading global mining company to recruit a Senior Metallurgical Engineer for Pietermaritzburg. You will optimize mineral processing operations to improve recovery and product quality while upholding safety and environmental standards.

You will lead process design, feasibility studies, and pilot plant activities, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with geologists, mining, and plant teams for integrated planning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in mineral processing, with a focus on base or precious metals.
• Proven track record in process optimization, design, and troubleshooting.
• Experience with metallurgical simulation software (e.g., MetSim, HSC Chemistry).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities.
• Willingness to travel to various mine sites as required.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement metallurgical processes to maximize mineral recovery and product quality.
• Conduct feasibility studies and pilot plant operations for new or improved processing techniques.
• Analyze process data to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
• Collaborate with geologists, mining engineers, and plant operations teams to ensure integrated operational planning.
• Manage laboratory operations, including sample analysis, test work design, and quality control.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and process flow diagrams.
• Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
• Troubleshoot operational issues and provide timely solutions to minimize downtime.
• Stay abreast of new technologies and industry best practices in metallurgical engineering.
