Placements24 seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our client’s R&D center in Polokwane, Limpopo. You will lead heavy-machinery design, conduct advanced FEA/CFD analyses, and develop durable, efficient mining equipment parts for harsh environments.

You will mentor engineers, ensure manufacturability, and stay ahead of material science advances. A Master’s in Mechanical Engineering is required, PhD preferred, with 8+ years of relevant experience and travel as needed.

About the Role

A global leader in mining technology and equipment manufacturing is seeking a seasoned Senior Mechanical Engineer for their advanced research and development center in Polokwane, Limpopo . This critical role involves the design, development, and enhancement of heavy-duty mining machinery, focusing on durability, efficiency, and safety in harsh operating environments. You will lead complex design projects, conduct rigorous engineering analyses, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to innovate and improve existing product lines. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of new mechanical components and systems for underground and surface mining equipment.
• Conduct advanced engineering analyses, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for stress, strain, and fatigue, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for thermal management, using software like ANSYS or Abaqus.
• Oversee the creation of detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings using CAD software such as SolidWorks or CATIA.
• Collaborate closely with product management, manufacturing, and field service teams to ensure designs meet operational requirements and are manufacturable.
• Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement design modifications to prevent recurrence.
• Specify materials and heat treatments for components to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
• Develop and execute comprehensive testing plans for prototypes and production components.
• Mentor junior engineers, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in mining equipment technology, materials, and manufacturing processes.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• A Ph.D. is a plus.
• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in mechanical design and analysis, with a strong emphasis on heavy machinery, off-highway vehicles, or mining equipment.
• Proven expertise in advanced CAD/CAE tools (FEA, CFD) and proficiency in industry-standard software.
• Deep understanding of material science, metallurgy, tribology, and failure analysis relevant to mining conditions.
• Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, power transmission systems, and structural design for high-stress applications.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to manage complex engineering projects.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present technical information.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits and testing.
