About the Role

Our client, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty mining equipment, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their operations in Bloemfontein . This critical role involves the conceptualization, design, and development of robust and reliable machinery used in the demanding mining sector. You will be responsible for driving innovation in equipment design, focusing on performance, safety, and maintainability. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, extensive experience with CAD software, and a deep understanding of materials science and manufacturing processes relevant to heavy machinery. Key Responsibilities

Lead the mechanical design process for new mining equipment and components, from concept through to production. Utilize advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor) for 3D modeling, detailed drawings, and assembly design. Perform engineering calculations and simulations (e.g., Finite Element Analysis - FEA) to validate designs for stress, fatigue, and thermal performance. Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes to ensure durability and cost-effectiveness. Collaborate closely with manufacturing, procurement, and testing departments to ensure design intent is realized. Develop and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical specifications. Troubleshoot design-related issues encountered during prototype testing or in-field operation. Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in mining equipment design. Ensure designs comply with relevant safety standards and mining regulations in South Africa .

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Professional registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) or Technologist (Pr.Tech.Eng). A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, preferably within the heavy equipment or mining machinery sector. Proficiency in 3D CAD software and experience with FEA tools. Strong understanding of material science, metallurgy, stress analysis, and manufacturing processes (machining, welding, fabrication). Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems is a significant advantage. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Knowledge of South African mining industry standards and practices.
