Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Lead Mechanical Development Engineer to drive the development of novel mechanical systems for consumer electronics and appliances. Based in Sandton, you will lead a team through concept-to-production, ensuring technical integrity and market success.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with electrical, design and manufacturing teams, and push for innovative, cost-effective solutions while maintaining rigorous documentation and supplier interfaces.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 10+ years in mechanical design and product development.
• 3+ years in a team leadership or management role.
• Experience bringing complex electromechanical products to market.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical development process from concept to production release.
• Mentor a team of mechanical engineers and designers to high performance.
• Oversee design, prototyping, testing and validation of components and systems.
• Collaborate with electrical, industrial design and manufacturing teams.
• Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, cost and aesthetic goals.
• Conduct design reviews and risk assessments.
• Drive innovation with new technologies and materials.
• Troubleshoot complex issues and provide effective solutions.
• Create and maintain specs, drawings and BOMs.
• Interface with suppliers and manufacturing partners for quality and manufacturability.
