Job summary

Placements24 in Vereeniging seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to drive the complete design lifecycle of bespoke Special Purpose Machinery. Work includes translating client needs into 3D models, BOMs, and production drawings using Inventor or SolidWorks in a collaborative workshop environment.

You will perform strength, tolerance, and kinematic analyses, select components, and coordinate with electrical/controls engineers to ensure safe, integrated machinery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant technical qualification.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design, specifically with Special Purpose Machinery or custom automation equipment.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks).
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including kinematics, dynamics, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
• Experience in selecting industrial components and materials.
• Ability to perform stress analysis and tolerance stack-up calculations.
• Willingness to work on-site in Vereeniging.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical systems for Special Purpose Machinery from concept to production-ready drawings.
• Create detailed 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using CAD software (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks).
• Select appropriate materials, components (motors, actuators, bearings, pneumatics, hydraulics), and manufacturing processes.
• Perform mechanical calculations for strength, stress, load, and tolerance analysis.
• Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and control systems.
• Develop clear and concise technical documentation, including assembly instructions and user manuals.
• Support the manufacturing and assembly process by providing technical assistance to the workshop team.
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical design issues that arise during build or testing phases.
• Ensure designs meet safety regulations, industry standards, and client specifications.
• Contribute to design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
