Placements24 is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a leading heavy mining equipment manufacturer in Soweto, Gauteng. You will design and validate mechanical systems, perform stress analyses, and develop robust 3D models and drawings for underground and surface machinery.

The role requires a 7+ year background in heavy equipment design, expertise in SolidWorks/Inventor and FEA, and a focus on safety, reliability and performance in harsh environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
• 7+ years of experience designing heavy industrial equipment, preferably mining or construction.
• Expertise with CAD tools (SolidWorks, Inventor) and FEA analysis.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, structural mechanics and materials.
• Ability to design for extreme environments and demanding conditions.

About the Role

Our client, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty mining equipment, is actively seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their operational base in Soweto, Gauteng . This is a critical role focused on the design, development, and continuous improvement of robust mechanical systems and components for underground and surface mining machinery. The successful candidate will be responsible for tackling complex engineering challenges in a demanding environment, ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the equipment. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience with heavy machinery design, a strong understanding of material science and structural analysis, and a commitment to engineering excellence in the mining sector. Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer complex mechanical systems and components for large-scale mining equipment.
• Perform detailed stress analysis, fatigue life calculations, and other engineering simulations to validate designs.
• Create comprehensive 3D models, 2D drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOM) using CAD software.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, testing, and field service teams to ensure design robustness and manufacturability.
• Investigate and resolve design-related failures and performance issues in existing equipment.
• Optimize designs for durability, safety, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness under harsh operating conditions.
• Research and specify appropriate materials and manufacturing processes for heavy-duty applications.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of product lines and development of new equipment concepts.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience in the design of heavy industrial equipment, preferably in the mining or construction sectors.
• Expertise in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor) and FEA analysis tools.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, structural mechanics, and material science relevant to heavy machinery.
• Proven ability to design for extreme environments and demanding operational conditions.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication skills for collaboration and technical documentation.
• Experience with testing and validation of heavy equipment is a plus.
