Purpose of the Position

The Senior Manager - Fleet Management (FML) is responsible for overseeing the strategic and operational management of the company's fleet to ensure optimal efficiency, compliance, cost control, and service delivery

Minimum Requirements

• A Relevant bachelor's degree NQF level 7
• Minimum of 5-10 years in fleet operations, preferably in large-scale or municipal environments.
• Proven track record in developing and executing fleet strategies, including lifecycle cost management and utilization optimization.
• Hands-on experience with specialized vehicles such as waste compactors, tippers, tankers, and yellow equipment

Core Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve the fleet management strategy aligned with the business objectives.
• Lead ongoing initiatives to enhance fleet utilization and optimize total lifecycle costs.
• Champion the implementation of technology to boost fleet efficiency, enhance safety standards, and drive performance improvements.
• Oversee daily fleet activities, ensuring efficient allocation, optimal utilization, and continuous performance tracking of vehicles and equipment
• Ensure all assets are maintained in excellent condition through preventative and corrective maintenance programs.
• Optimize fleet availability and reliability to meet operational and contractual requirements.
• Maintain the operational readiness of specialized fleet assets, including waste compactors, loaders, tippers, tankers, and other heavy-duty yellow machinery
• Ensure compliance with all contractual requirements relating to fleet operations.
• Oversee the implementation training initiatives to ensure operational integrity
• Manage risk, insurance claims, and accident investigations effectively.
• Manage the fleet budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability Provide support towards service provider contracts for fuel, maintenance, and leasing.
• Lead, mentor, and develop fleet management teams and supervisors.
• Cultivate effective partnerships across internal teams, external suppliers, and clients to enhance collaboration and service delivery
• Provide senior management with regular performance reports and strategic guidance to senior management to support informed decision-making
• Support bids and business development teams by contributing fleet-related data, operational insights, and written input to strengthen proposal documentation and secure new business opportunities.
• Oversee ad hoc and 'as-and-when' fleet operations and service requests in support of eThekwini Municipality requirements
• Actively engage in the review and management of debtor aging to improve cash flow and reduce overdue balances
• Support the achievement of SLA targets by aligning fleet operations with contractual performance standards and client expectations

Skills

• Ability to manage vehicle allocation, utilization, and lifecycle cost efficiency.
• Skilled in designing and executing preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
• Familiar with operating and maintaining heavy-duty vehicles and machinery.
• Skilled in managing SLAs and ensuring adherence to service agreements.
• Capable of mentoring and developing fleet teams and supervisors.
• Strong relationship-building skills with internal departments, suppliers, and clients

Knowledge

• Deep understanding of fleet management principles, including asset lifecycle, utilization metrics, and cost optimization.
• Knowledge of specialized vehicles and equipment (e.g., waste compactors, loaders, tippers, tankers, yellow machinery).
• Familiarity with preventive and corrective maintenance planning to ensure asset reliability and readiness.
• Experience in managing ad hoc and contract-based fleet services, particularly in municipal or public sector contexts.
