Placements24 is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Advisor to join its team, focusing on mining, environmental law, and CSR in South Africa. The role is remote with travel and requires strategic legal counsel on regulatory compliance, project development, contract negotiations, and risk management.

The ideal candidate is admitted as Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with at least 10 years PQE in mining and resources law, environmental compliance, and large-scale project contracts,

Qualifications

• Requires Admitted Attorney of the High Court of SA and 10+ years PQE in mining/regulatory law.
• Demonstrated experience in negotiations of large-scale mining contracts.
• Strong analytical and strategic thinking for compliance and risk management.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client, a significant player in the mining and resources sector, is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Advisor to join their team, operating remotely with occasional travel. This role requires extensive expertise in the complex legal landscape of mining, environmental law, and corporate social responsibility in South Africa. You will provide strategic legal counsel on regulatory compliance, project development, contract negotiations, and risk management, ensuring the company operates sustainably and ethically. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of mining legislation and a proven ability to navigate challenging legal and commercial environments, playing a key role in supporting the company's operations and strategic growth initiatives across the North West province and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of mining law, including prospecting rights, mining permits, and environmental impact assessments.
• Ensure compliance with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and related environmental legislation.
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements related to mining operations, exploration, and resource beneficiation.
• Advise on corporate social responsibility initiatives and community engagement agreements.
• Manage legal risks associated with mining operations, including health and safety regulations.
• Liaise with government authorities, regulatory bodies, and external legal counsel.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience.
• Specialized experience and deep understanding of South African mining and resources law .
• Proficiency in environmental law and regulatory compliance within the mining sector.
• Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation and drafting for large-scale projects.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking abilities.
