About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the mining sector, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join their dynamic team in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal . This is a critical role overseeing the geological stability and safety of mining operations. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and slope stability analysis within a mining context. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to significant projects and shape the future of safe and efficient resource extraction. You will be instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of operational integrity and risk management across various mining sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive geotechnical investigations and analyses for new and existing mining projects.
• Develop and implement geotechnical monitoring programs to assess ground conditions and potential hazards.
• Provide expert advice on excavation designs, pit slope stability, underground support systems, and tailings dam design.
• Utilize advanced geotechnical software for modeling and simulation of ground behavior.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, specifications, and recommendations for project stakeholders.
• Collaborate with mine planning, production, and environmental teams to integrate geotechnical considerations into operational strategies.
• Oversee junior geotechnical engineers and provide technical guidance and mentorship.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, industry standards, and environmental guidelines.
• Participate in risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for geotechnical hazards.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
• A Master's degree is advantageous.
• A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, with a significant portion focused on the mining industry.
• Proven expertise in slope stability analysis, numerical modeling (e.g., FLAC, Rocscience), and foundation design.
• Strong understanding of South African mining regulations and best practices.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Proficiency in geotechnical data analysis and interpretation.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaunt with diverse teams and management.
• Registered Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) with ECSA is highly preferred.
• Experience with fieldwork, including site investigations and data collection.
