Job summary

Placements24 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical investigations for mining and civil infrastructure projects. You will analyze subsurface conditions, develop foundation and slope designs, and prepare technical reports.

The ideal candidate holds a Master’s degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, Pr.Eng. with 7+ years of post‑graduate experience, and is proficient in PLAXIS, GEO5, SLOPE/W and SEEP/W.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering with specialization.
• Pr. Eng. registration with ECSA is essential.
• Minimum 7 years post-graduate geotechnical experience in mining and civil sectors.
• Proven experience leading geotechnical projects from investigation to design.
• Proficiency in PLAXIS, GEO5, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, FLAC or similar.
• Strong soil/rock mechanics and hydrogeology knowledge.
• Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience in the Eastern Cape region advantageous.
• Commitment to HSE best practices and safe work conduct.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage geotechnical investigations for mining and civil projects.
• Plan, execute, and interpret field investigations (drilling, CPT, testing, geophysics).
• Perform slope stability, foundation design, seepage, and seismic assessments.
• Develop geotechnical design recommendations for foundations, retaining structures, and earthworks.
• Prepare geotechnical reports, design reports, and specs.
• Oversee lab testing programs and interpretation of soil/rock properties.
• Mentor junior geotechnical engineers and technicians.
• Liaise with clients, regulators, and stakeholders to communicate findings.
• Conduct site visits during construction for QA and support.
• Stay updated on software and tech developments; ensure SA standards compliance.
• Contribute to proposals and business development.
