Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Principal Electrical Engineer in Randburg, Gauteng to lead the design and execution of large-scale HV infrastructure projects, including substations and transmission lines. This senior, office-based role requires deep power systems expertise and strong leadership to guide project teams and ensure design integrity and safety.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems.
• Pr.Eng. registration with ECSA is mandatory.
• Minimum 12 years' progressive experience in electrical engineering, focused on power infrastructure.
• Experience designing substations up to 400 kV and transmission/distribution networks.
• Proficiency with power system analysis software (PSS/E, ETAP, PowerFactory).
• Expertise in protection and control systems for HV applications and knowledge of IEC/SANS standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of HV substations, transmission and distribution systems.
• Develop detailed engineering specifications, drawings, and calculations.
• Perform load flow, fault studies, and transient stability analyses.
• Oversee the selection and specification of HV equipment (transformers, switchgear, protection relays).
• Ensure designs comply with national and international standards and codes (IEC, SANS).
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to a team of engineers and designers.
• Review and approve engineering designs and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and clients for successful delivery.
• Conduct site investigations and support commissioning activities.
