Collaboration with art directors and cross-functional teams is essential. The ideal candidate has 5+ years in games, a strong portfolio, and expertise in digital painting tools like Photoshop or Procreate.

About the Role

Our client, an award-winning game development studio, is seeking a highly imaginative Senior Concept Artist to join their talented team in Upington, Northern Cape . This is an exceptional opportunity to shape the visual identity of our upcoming AAA titles. You will be responsible for creating compelling concept art for characters, environments, props, and overall mood, setting the artistic direction for the game. The ideal candidate possesses a profound understanding of art fundamentals, a passion for visual storytelling, and the ability to translate abstract ideas into striking visual designs. This on-site role ensures close collaboration with the art and design teams, fostering a dynamic and iterative creative process within our state-of-the-art studio.

Key Responsibilities

• Create high-quality concept art for characters, creatures, environments, vehicles, and props, defining their visual style, mood, and functionality.
• Collaborate closely with art directors, game designers, and modelers to establish and maintain artistic vision and consistency throughout the development process.
• Explore multiple visual directions and iterate on designs based on feedback and project requirements.
• Develop detailed sketches, illustrations, and color studies to effectively communicate design ideas.
• Contribute to the overall world-building and aesthetic development of game projects.
• Stay abreast of current trends and advancements in concept art and game development.
• Mentor junior concept artists, providing guidance and feedback to foster their artistic growth.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the target audience and market for the games.
• Contribute to the creation of mood boards and visual targets for the art team.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Concept Artist in the video game industry, with a strong portfolio showcasing relevant work.
• Expertise in digital painting software such as Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, or similar.
• Strong foundation in drawing, painting, anatomy, perspective, composition, and color theory.
• Proven ability to design a wide range of assets, from characters and creatures to environments and props.
• Experience working within established art direction and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate creative ideas clearly.
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
• Experience working on AAA titles is highly desirable.
• Passion for video games and a keen understanding of visual storytelling in interactive media.
