Placements24 is assisting a Centurion-based specialty chemicals manufacturer in finding a Senior Chemical Engineer focused on Process Safety Management (PSM). The role leads PSM programs, PHAs, RCAs and MOC with a strong regulatory compliance mindset.

Applicants should bring a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering, 10+ years in chemical engineering with ≥5 years in process safety, and ideally PrEng registration. This on-site role emphasizes safety leadership in hazardous environments.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent specialty chemicals manufacturer, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Chemical Engineer with a specialization in Process Safety Management (PSM) to join their team in Centurion, Gauteng, ZA. This critical role will focus on developing, implementing, and maintaining robust PSM programs to ensure the highest standards of safety across all operations. You will lead risk assessments, incident investigations, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of chemical processes, inherent safety design principles, and a proven track record in implementing effective safety management systems in hazardous environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive Process Safety Management (PSM) programs in accordance with relevant regulations.
• Lead and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and What-If studies.
• Conduct incident investigations and root cause analyses (RCAs) for safety-related events.
• Develop and implement management of change (MOC) procedures.
• Oversee pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs) for new and modified processes.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs for engineers and operations personnel.
• Ensure compliance with mechanical integrity (MI) programs and procedures.
• Audit PSM systems and recommend improvements to enhance safety performance.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and EHS departments to integrate safety into all aspects of plant design and operation.
• Stay current with industry best practices and regulatory changes related to process safety.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in chemical engineering, with at least 5 years focused on process safety.
• In-depth knowledge and practical experience with PSM elements (e.g., PHA, MOC, MI, Incident Investigation).
• Experience conducting various PHA methodologies (HAZOP, LOPA).
• Familiarity with relevant safety standards and regulations (e.g., OSHA PSM, Seveso III).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation abilities.
• Ability to lead teams and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Professional Engineer (PrEng) registration is highly desirable.
• Experience in the specialty chemicals sector is a strong advantage.
