Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Biotechnologist in Pietermaritzburg to lead experimental design and execution in molecular biology, genetics, and bioprocess engineering, mentoring junior staff and contributing to innovative projects in sustainable agriculture and therapeutics.

You will interpret data, develop new methodologies, collaborate across disciplines, and help drive scientific discovery in a state-of-the-art lab, with a hybrid work model and strong emphasis on quality and ethics.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related life science field.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a research and development setting, preferably biotechnology.

Responsibilities

• Design, conduct, and optimize complex experiments in molecular biology, cell culture, and genetic engineering.
• Analyze and interpret experimental data, generating comprehensive reports and presentations for stakeholders.
• Develop and validate new research methodologies and protocols to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.
• Maintain meticulous records of all experimental procedures, results, and observations.
• Troubleshoot experimental issues and propose effective solutions.
• Stay abreast of latest literature and industry trends.
• Contribute to grant proposals and scientific publications.
• Assist in management and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Mentor and guide junior researchers and technicians.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of hands‑on experience in a research and development setting, preferably within the biotechnology sector.
• Proven expertise in techniques such as PCR, qPCR, DNA sequencing, gene cloning, Western blotting, ELISA, and mammalian cell culture.
• Strong understanding of statistical analysis and experimental design.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.
• Proficiency in relevant scientific software and data analysis tools.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex scientific information clearly.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced research environment.
• Experience in project management and leading research initiatives is highly desirable.
