Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Process Development Engineer in Klerksdorp to lead scale-up from lab to pilot plant and on to commercial production. You will design experiments, optimize processes, and develop PFDs, P&IDs, and operating procedures while advancing technology transfer with R&D teams.

The role emphasizes PHAs, safety, and regulatory compliance, along with data-driven optimization and clear technical reporting. GMP familiarity is a plus for this position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in process development, scale-up, or production engineering.
• Hands-on experience with pilot plant operations and equipment.
• Proficiency in process simulation and modeling software (e.g., Aspen Plus, CHEMCAD).
• Strong understanding of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and separation technologies.
• Experience with safety assessments such as HAZOP studies.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and experimental design skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Familiarity with GMP is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead the scale-up of new chemical processes from lab bench to pilot plant and full commercial scale.
• Design and conduct experiments to optimize reaction conditions, separation processes, and product isolation.
• Develop process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and operating procedures for new processes.
• Perform process hazard analyses (PHAs) and implement necessary safety measures.
• Collaborate closely with R&D chemists and engineers to ensure smooth technology transfer.
• Troubleshoot process issues encountered during pilot trials and early commercial runs.
• Evaluate and select appropriate process equipment for scale-up operations.
• Analyze process data, interpret results, and make recommendations for improvement.
• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for project stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, environmental, and quality standards.
