Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Remote Site Safety Officer to oversee health and safety on nationwide construction sites from a fully remote location. You will conduct virtual inspections, review safety documentation, and guide on-site teams using digital tools to ensure OHSA and Construction Regulations compliance.

The role requires a National Diploma in Safety Management and at least 5 years of site safety experience. NEBOSH IGC is desirable.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client is a leading construction group committed to maintaining the highest safety standards across all their projects. We are looking for a dedicated Remote Site Safety Officer to join our fully remote team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations on various construction sites across the country, managed entirely from a remote location. Leveraging technology and proactive communication, you will conduct virtual inspections, review safety documentation, and provide expert guidance to on-site teams. This is a unique opportunity for a safety professional to influence safety culture and practices without being physically present on every site, focusing on robust digital monitoring and support systems. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, possess exceptional analytical skills, and have a deep understanding of construction safety legislation and best practices, adapted for remote oversight.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor health and safety plans and procedures for construction projects remotely.
• Conduct virtual site inspections using photographic/video evidence and reports from on-site personnel.
• Review and approve risk assessments, method statements, and safety files submitted by site teams.
• Provide remote guidance and support to site safety representatives and management on safety matters.
• Investigate incidents and near misses, prepare detailed reports, and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant South African Occupational Health and Safety legislation and construction industry standards.
• Deliver remote safety training and toolbox talks to site personnel.
• Maintain comprehensive safety records and documentation, accessible digitally.
• Analyze safety performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
• Foster a proactive safety culture through effective remote communication and engagement strategies.

Requirements

• A National Diploma in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in construction site safety management.
• Experience in developing and implementing safety management systems.
• In-depth knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Construction Regulations.
• Proficiency in using digital tools for communication, documentation, and reporting (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Procore, cloud storage).
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, adapted for remote interaction.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent is highly desirable.
• Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g., SAIOSH) is an advantage.
