Ideal candidates have 12+ years in mechanical design for consumer electronics, expertise in SolidWorks or Creo, and strong DFM/DFT knowledge. Remote collaboration with overseas manufacturing partners is essential.

About the Role

Our client, a cutting-edge technology firm specializing in advanced consumer electronics, is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Principal Mechanical Engineer for a fully remote position. This role is centered on leading the mechanical design and product development efforts for a new generation of smart home devices. The ideal candidate will possess a strong track record in designing complex, miniaturized mechanical systems, managing the entire product lifecycle from concept to mass production. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer , you will be a key technical contributor, driving design decisions, mentoring team members, and ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance. This is a remote-first opportunity, requiring exceptional communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with distributed teams, contributing to projects tied to our Mossel Bay, Western Cape operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of consumer electronic products, from initial concept through to mass production.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and 2D drawings using advanced software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo).
• Perform rigorous analysis, including structural, thermal, and vibration analysis, to ensure product reliability and performance.
• Oversee prototype development, testing, and validation, analyzing results and implementing design improvements.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineering, firmware development, industrial design, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless product integration.
• Work with overseas manufacturing partners to optimize designs for cost-effective mass production and ensure quality control.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior mechanical engineers in a remote setting.
• Contribute to the development of intellectual property and maintain a high level of technical innovation.
• Manage project timelines and deliverables for mechanical engineering aspects of product development.
• Identify and assess new technologies and materials to enhance product design and functionality.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 12+ years of experience in mechanical product design and development, with a significant focus on consumer electronics or similar miniaturized, high-volume products.
• Expertise in CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or similar) and CAE tools for structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.
• Proven experience in designing for injection molding, metal stamping, and other high-volume manufacturing processes.
• Strong understanding of material properties, tolerances, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and work effectively in a fully remote environment.
• Superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFT (Design for Testability) principles.
