Placements24 is seeking a Product Development Engineer to drive end-to-end development of consumer electronics in a remote-first role. You will take ideas from concept through prototyping, testing, and manufacturing liaison, working with CAD tools like Fusion 360 and Onshape, and collaborating across disciplines.

Competenze

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years product development experience in consumer electronics or mechanical products
• Proficiency in 3D CAD and basic electronics/firmware understanding
• Prototyping and testing experience (3D printing, CNC)
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection molding, PCB assembly)
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the conceptualization and development of new electronic and mechanical products, from ideation to mass production.
• Design and iterate on product components and systems using CAD software (e.g., Fusion 360, Onshape) and relevant simulation tools.
• Develop functional prototypes and conduct thorough testing to validate design performance, reliability, and user experience.
• Collaborate closely with industrial designers, software engineers, and marketing teams in a virtual environment.
• Prepare detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
• Work with external manufacturing partners to oversee tooling, production processes, and quality control.
• Troubleshoot technical challenges encountered during development and production phases.
• Stay informed about market trends and emerging technologies to identify new product opportunities.
• Manage project schedules and deliverables, ensuring timely product launches.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in product development, with a strong portfolio of successfully launched consumer electronic or mechanical products.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software and basic understanding of electronics and firmware.
• Experience with prototyping techniques (3D printing, CNC machining) and testing methodologies.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (injection molding, PCB assembly, etc.).
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and adapt to changing project needs in a remote setting.
• Experience with project management tools is a plus.
• Must have a dedicated, quiet workspace and reliable high-speed internet access suitable for remote work in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA.
