Job summary

Placements24 seeks an Optical Network Specialist to design, implement and maintain advanced optical fiber networks in Welkom. You will lead fiber routes, splicing points, and hardware placement while ensuring high-speed data transmission and network reliability across the Free State.

The role requires 5+ years of hands-on experience with optical networks, proficiency with OTDRs, fusion splicers, and power meters, and a strong grasp of PON and DWDM technologies.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
• Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience with optical fiber network design and maintenance.
• Proficiency with optical testing equipment such as OTDRs, fusion splicers, and optical power meters.
• Strong understanding of PON, DWDM, and other optical transmission technologies.
• Ability to read and interpret complex network diagrams and technical specifications.
• Excellent analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail for ensuring network integrity in Welkom.

Responsibilities

• Design and plan optical fiber network layouts, including fiber routes, splicing points, and equipment placement.
• Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of new optical fiber infrastructure.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and repair of optical network faults, utilizing specialized testing equipment.
• Monitor network health and performance, implementing optimizations to enhance capacity and reduce latency.
• Develop and maintain documentation for optical network assets, including fiber records and test results.
• Stay updated on advancements in optical network technologies and recommend upgrades or new solutions.
