About the Role

Our client, a pioneering research and development firm in the chemical sector, is seeking an innovative and detail-oriented Remote Chemical Process Engineer to join their cutting-edge R&D team. This is a fully remote position, enabling you to contribute to groundbreaking chemical process development from anywhere within South Africa. You will be responsible for designing, scaling up, and optimizing novel chemical processes from laboratory bench scale to pilot plant demonstration. The ideal candidate possesses a strong theoretical foundation in chemical engineering, extensive experience in process development and scale-up, and a passion for translating scientific discoveries into viable industrial applications. As a remote-first organization, we emphasize collaboration through digital platforms and provide the necessary support for effective virtual teamwork. Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop new chemical processes for research and pilot plant scale operations.
• Conduct process simulations and modeling to predict performance and optimize design parameters.
• Perform experimental design (DoE) and analyze results to guide process development.
• Oversee the scale-up of laboratory processes to pilot plant and potentially commercial scale.
• Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, and equipment specifications for new processes.
• Collaborate closely with research scientists and other engineers to achieve project objectives.
• Analyze pilot plant data, troubleshoot issues, and implement process improvements.
• Conduct techno-economic assessments for new process concepts.
• Ensure all R&D activities comply with safety, health, and environmental regulations.
• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations on research findings and process development.
• Contribute to the intellectual property development through patent applications.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in chemical process R&D, scale-up, and pilot plant operations.
• Proficiency in process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, ChemCAD) and design tools.
• Strong understanding of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mass transfer.
• Experience with experimental design (DoE) and statistical analysis.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a remote setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information effectively.
• Experience with safety reviews (e.g., HAZOP) is a plus.
• Proven track record of innovation and contribution to process development.
• Must have reliable internet access and a suitable home office environment.
