Job summary

Alstom in Midrand invites applications for the Services RAMS Lead Engineer. You will conduct RAMS analyses, prepare reports for stakeholders, and ensure reliability targets across railway subsystems. The role reports to the Services Engineering Manager within the Services department.

Requires a degree in Electrical or Electro-Mechanical Engineering and registration with ECSA, plus hands-on RAMS experience and strong cross-functional collaboration capabilities.

Responsibilities

Job Purpose

To conductReliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAMS)analyses and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders, focusing on train performance and failures to ensure consistent reliability and availability. Performroot cause analysesand assign responsibility to either internal or external stakeholders as appropriate. Apply relevantEngineering/RAMS processes and guidelinesto evaluate potential suppliers, ensuring their capabilities and methodologies align withQuality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD)requirements and targets. Monitor and report on supplier performance, includingPreliminary Product Approval (PPA)andFinal qualityreviews as requested by the Sourcing team, and calculate penalties when required. Analyse and deliver comprehensive data insights to internal teams such as Quality, Train Systems and Maintenance Engineering, Warranty, Train Design, and Train Control and to external stakeholders, including suppliers and customers.

• Perform RAMS analyses in alignment with QCD work packages commitments to produce related RAMS deliverables that meet customer requirements.
• Coordinate and perform reliability design reviews to ensure reliability requirements are met.
• Participate in design reviews coordinated by project management office or internal stakeholders to validate compliance with reliability requirements.
• Communicate RAMS requirements to the Souring team for product specification purposes during sourcing processes including RAMS plans, documents and methodologies.
• Review and analyse documentation received from suppliers to recommend go/no go decisions.
• Extract and analyse monthly train failure data per supplier. Conduct and report on the reliability performance assessments (predictive or measure) of the product. Categorise and allocate failures and identify the required actions to achieve reliability targets.
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders across various train sub systems to validate failure classification, RAMS and responsibility allocations.
• Schedule reliability discussions with suppliers and internal subject matter experts, report on failures, address RAMS non-compliance, confirm responsibility allocations and ensure suppliers acceptance.
• Prepare and distribute supplier RAMS reports to suppliers, Engineering, Quality, Warranty and Sourcing teams for follow up.
• Prepare and submit train reliability reports (Top 10 subsystems contributing failures) to Executives, Heads of departments and the Warranty team.
• Produce Steerco report highlighting the Top 3 subsystem failures, regional performance variances and key contributors to train failures.
• Produce central reports in accordance with prescribed templates.
• Prepare customer reports detailing train performance, customer specific failures, main issues, solutions and actions reflecting depot performance per site.
• Produce and submit the sourcing report on individual supplier performance.
• Perform RAMS-related Final Quality Assurance (FQA) processes during the warranty period (by supplier or subsystem), submit reports to Quality and Sourcing teams, and calculate penalties as requested.
• Address internal and external customer feedback to secure approval for RAMS deliverables within project’s scope and commitments.
• Conduct research and reliability impact studies on various sub systems to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Recommend enhancements to reliability processes, mitigation strategies and preventative measures and redesign to cost initiatives.

Quality and Risk Management

• Perform reliability growth predictions and recommend solutions to prevent future failures.
• Participate in reliability growth meetings, analyse failures registered on 8 D and the web portal and recommend solutions.
• Drive quality of base data used for reliability analysis (using FRB (failure review board) to challenge and drive improvement)
• Contribute to the maintenance plan improvements
• Contribute to risk assessments related to Engineering change
• Lead the improvement of the management of safety related defects.
• Degree or BTech in Electrical, Electro-Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 3 Years experience in Electrical or Electro-Mechanical Engineering preferably applied to Railway products.
• Registered or registerable as a Professional Engineer/Technologist with ECSA

• Occasional travelling may be required to suppliers and other sites
• Incumbent may be required to work outside normal working hours
