Job summary

The University of KwaZulu-Natal invites applications for a Professor in Historical Studies within the School of Arts, Howard College Campus. Qualifications

• PhD in Historical Studies or related discipline.
• At least 9 years of working and relevant experience in teaching, research, or industry.
• Evidence of current and sustained publication in quality journals.
• Evidence of sustained attraction of external research grants.
• Sustained track record of supervising postgraduate students (Masters and PhD).
• Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
• Strong academic leadership with mentorship and coaching.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and lecture modules in Historical Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Supervise postgraduate students, especially Masters and PhD candidates.
• Engage in community engagement and academic citizenship.
• Serve in leadership roles within the university.

The School of Arts is well established with a strong research profile and has a large number of undergraduates and postgraduates. The Incumbent will co-ordinate and lecture modules in Historical Studies, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The successful candidate will supervise postgraduate students, actively participat[e] in community engagement/ academic citizenship. S/he will be serving in various leadership roles within the university. The incumbent will also be expected to engage with curriculum development and s/he will play a leading role in teaching and research in the History discipline, specifically in Historical Studies.

The incumbent will report to the Head of Discipline: History

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• A PhD degree in Historical Studies, or related discipline
• At least 9 years of working and relevant experience in either teaching, research, or industry
• Evidence of current and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level
• Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of external research grants
• A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
• Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
• Evidence of strong and sustained academic leadership within the Department / School/ College/ University, which includes mentorship and coaching
