Job summary

Placements24 in Randburg is seeking an Automotive Powertrain Development Engineer to lead design, testing, and validation of ICE, electric and hybrid powertrains. You will run simulations, plan experiments, and optimize performance while meeting regulatory and cost targets.

The role requires a strong background in thermodynamics, engine mechanics, and battery tech, with collaboration across engineering and manufacturing teams. State-of-the-art facility in Randburg.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of automotive powertrain development experience.
• Strong knowledge of ICE, electric motors and battery tech.
• Experience with powertrain simulations (GT-SUITE, MATLAB/Simulink).
• Proficiency in data acquisition and analysis.
• Familiarity with calibration tools.
• Excellent analytical and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop powertrain components and systems.
• Run simulations to predict performance, efficiency, and emissions.
• Plan and conduct engine dynamometer, chassis dynamometer, and vehicle tests.
• Analyze data, interpret results, and identify optimization areas.
• Troubleshoot powertrain issues during development and testing.
• Collaborate with vehicle integration, software, and manufacturing teams.
• Ensure designs meet performance, regulatory, and cost targets.
• Stay updated on electrification and alternative fuels.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations.
• Assist with integration and calibration of powertrain control systems.
