Job summary

Elchemie in the Helderberg area of Cape Town is seeking a experienced Process Supervisor to oversee unit processes, ensure compliance, and drive process optimization.

You will supervise wastewater treatment and MBR operations, analyze SCADA trends, and mentor the operations team while maintaining ISO/Green Drop standards.

The role requires registered Class V Process Controller, 6+ years of experience, and a proven track record in safety and performance.

Qualifications

• Degree or National Diploma in Chemical Engineering.
• DWS registration as Class V Process Controller.
• 6 years' wastewater treatment and MBR operations, with 2+ years in a supervisory capacity.
• Expertise in wastewater chemistry, SCADA, PLC-controlled equipment, and root-cause troubleshooting.
• Driver's license (Code B/EB) and own vehicle.
• MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Clear criminal record.

What you'll be doing

Primary Function - Process Supervision & Operations Optimization

• Supervise unit processes across liquid and solids handling systems to ensure continuous, cost-effective performance aligned with contractual standards.
• Conduct daily inspections of unit processes and equipment, coordinating with the Plant Manager on operational sequences and adjustments.
• Monitor laboratory wastewater analyses (COD, ammonia, solids, etc.) and implement corrective process changes to maximize plant performance.
• Drive continuous improvement and loss-minimization initiatives through chemical dosing adjustments and process optimization.

Primary Function - Technical Monitoring & Compliance

• Analyze process trends, SCADA data, and numerical readings from flow meters and level sensors to detect anomalies timeously.
• Maintain plant operations within ISO standards (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 50001), Green Drop requirements, and the OHS Act.
• Provide structured on-the-job training and mentorship to operations team members.

Secondary Function - Administration & Reporting

• Maintain accurate operational registers, incident logs, and maintenance tracking records.
• Compile detailed monthly and ad-hoc operational performance reports for Plant Management using statistical and qualitative data.

What you'll need

• Degree or National Diploma in Chemical Engineering
• Professional Registration: Must be registered with DWS as a Class V Process Controller (non-negotiable).
• Minimum 6 years' operating experience in wastewater treatment and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
• Proven expertise in wastewater chemistry, complex integrated SCADA systems, PLC-controlled equipment, and root-cause troubleshooting.
• Valid Code B/EB driver's license & Own Vehicle.
• Proficient in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Clear criminal record required.
• Must be medically fit and able to successfully pass the required site medical assessment.
