Job summary

Tiger Brands is seeking a Slicer Operator to ensure smooth production for bread packaging. You will communicate issues to the Supervisor, monitor metal detectors and packaging quality, and maintain clean, safe working conditions in the area.

Responsibilities include verifying dates, seals, FIFO usage, and maintaining equipment safety. You will also report deviations promptly and support general housekeeping across shifts.

Qualifications

• Experience operating slicers in a bakery/food production environment.
• Ability to monitor packaging quality and ensure FIFO compliance.
• Adherence to safety procedures and food safety policy.

Responsibilities

• Communicate problems with incoming Operator and Supervisor.
• Check metal detector reject box and ensure it is locked.
• Check printer dates for accuracy; escalate to Supervisor if unsure.
• Ensure bags are sealed and kwiklok locked securely.
• Verify bag seal integrity and avoid holes.
• Monitor bag tensioners to prevent tearing.
• Ensure adequate bags and Kwikloks are available.
• Keep packaging trolley area neat and in designated place.
• Monitor slicer batch counts and perform blade changes as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness and good housekeeping in the machine area.
• Follow FIFO packaging usage from stores and trolley.
• Return stock bags to the packaging trolley at shift end.
• Monitor conveyors to prevent squashed bread.
• Assess product quality and remove substandard items.
• Observe machine operation to prevent damage.
• Check slice evenness and request adjustments if required.
• Only trained Operators to operate metal detectors.
• Print clear date coding on bags.
• Ensure packaging is ready to avoid delays during changeovers.
• Verify machine safety guards are in place and functional.
• Report deviations to Fitter/Supervisor for quick repair.
• Log temporary fixes with Supervisor to speed up repair.
• Check metal detectors hourly.
• Uphold Safe Work procedures and Good Work Practices.
• Adhere to Food safety policy.
• Perform any reasonable work-related duty as requested by Supervisor.

Job description

• Slicer Operator to communicate any problems with incoming Operator and Supervisor.
• Check metal detector reject box and ensure that it is locked.
• Check printer. Ensure dates printed are correct. If in doubt, then speak to your Supervisor
• Check the Kwiklok on the bags. Ensure that the bag is locked firmly
• Check seal on bag. Ensue that the seal is good. No big holes.
• Check the bag tensioner. Ensure that it is not tearing the bags.
• Check and ensure that you have enough bags and Kwikloks.
• Ensure packaging trolley, is located in it’s designated place and neatly packed
• Check batch counter for slicer blade changing (+/- 23 000 loaves)

• Ensure that the machine and surrounding area is kept neat and clean and practice good housekeeping. (No boxes and crumbs on the floor.)
• Packaging usage should follow the FIFO system, from stores and from trolley.
• At the end of a shift, all stock bags should be returned to Packaging trolley.
• Monitor conveyors from Cooler out to Slicing to prevent squashed bread.
• Monitor product quality and remove substandard product.
• Monitor machine operation. Ensure that no damages are created
• Monitor packaging quality throughout shift.
• Check the slice evenness of the bread throughout shift, request if adjustments are required.
• Only trained Operators shall be allowed to operate the metal detectors.
• Ensure CLEAR date coding is printed on bag.
• Ensure that packaging is ready and available to avoid delays during change overs.
• Ensure that the machine is safe and all safety guards are in place and in good working order.
• Report to your Fitter and Supervisor, if there are any deviations to be repaired immediately.
• Report all temporary fixings to your Supervisor to speed up repair.
• Metal Detectors to be checked hourly.
• Ensure Safe Work procedures and Good Work Practices are adhered to at all times.
• Adhere to the Food safety policy.
• Perform any reasonable work -related duty as requested by the Supervisor.

• Active participation in internal forums e.g. INVOCOMS, Training interventions, Employee engagement sessions.
