Valterra Platinum Limited in Mogalakwena Mine, Mokopane, seeks an occupational hygiene professional at band 7 to support risk assessments and hygiene programs in a mining setting. You will report to the Shaft Ventilation Engineer and lead hygiene activities across sites.

Responsibilities include surveying workplaces for hazards, collecting samples, evaluating exposure levels, and implementing effective controls, while ensuring regulatory compliance and safety excellence.

Formación

• Degree in Occupational Hygiene or equivalent and relevant registrations.
• Registered with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene on Technologist level.
• Chamber of Mine Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (Intermediate).
• BSc Honours in Occupational Hygiene advantageous.
• Honours in Physiology and registered advantageous.
• Associate with Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa advantageous.

Responsabilidades

• Assist in occupational health risk assessments.
• Conduct surveys of workplaces for chemical, physical, ergonomic, biological or psychological hazards.
• Evaluate hazard levels with specialized equipment.
• Take samples for airborne pollutants, fumes, gases, vapours or mists.
• Compare findings with statutory exposure limits to identify hazards.
• Recommend controls for risk mitigation.
• Conduct ergonomically oriented surveys to improve the working environment.
• Identify risks and controls in the potable water quality program.
• Analyze findings and compare to national/international standards.
• Submit recommendations for correction of hazardous exposures using the hierarchy of controls.
• Communicate progress of hygiene targets to operations.
• Monitor and improve hygiene performance standards.
• Ensure regulatory compliance with applicable regulations.
• Foster teamwork between maintenance and production on hygiene matters.
• Implement and maintain applicable hygiene regulations and standards.
• Collaborate with Risk Management and Occupational Hygienist on risk assessments.
• Promote a high-performing culture aligned with company values.

Job Description

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Assist in performing occupational health risk assessment.
• Assist in performing occupational health risk assessments.
• Conduct surveys of workplaces with potential occupational health hazards in the form of chemical hazards, physical hazards, ergonomic hazards, biological hazards or psychological hazards.
• Evaluate and quantify the levels of the different hazards present by making use of specialized equipment and instrumentation.
• Taking samples for airborne pollutants and components, fumes, gases, vapours or mists.
• Compare findings of assessments and surveys with statutory exposure limits to determine if a potential hazardous situation exists.
• Recommend controls for risk mitigation.
• Conduct ergonomically orientated surveys to alter the working environment to minimize hazards to the employee.
• Identify risks and controls in the Potable water quality program
• To analyze findings correctly and to compare findings to recognized national as well as international standards where available.
• Study occupational hygiene impacts. Formulate and submit recommendations for the correction of hazardous exposures through the correct application of the hierarchy of controls, improved housekeeping, and substitution of hazardous substances with less hazardous substances, isolation of processes, which are the sources of hazardous substances and as a last possible resort, providing PPE.
• Assist in regularly communicating progress of Operation against occupational hygiene targets and objectives via a design communication, supervisory and management forum to all concerned
• Assist in evaluating, monitoring and providing continuous feedback to the operation regarding the occupational hygiene performance efficiencies and standards
• Ensure that the occupational hygiene standards and procedures are up to date and understood and followed by the teams
• Encourage co-operation and teamwork between maintenance and production personnel regarding occupational hygiene matters
• Implement and maintain applicable occupational hygiene Regulations, Acts, Codes of practice and standards
• Liaise with Risk Management team and Occupational Hygienist for Operation risk assessment

• Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory, legislative and permitting requirements.

This role is at a band 7 Level and reporting to the Shaft Ventilation Engineer.

Qualifications

• Degree in Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, Physiology or equivalent.
• Registered with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene on Technologist Level.
• Chamber of Mine Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (Intermediate).
• BSc Honns degree in Occupational Hygiene Advantageous.
• Honors Degree in Physiology and registered Advantageous.
• Registered as an Associate with the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa Advantageous.

Experience, Knowledge And Skills

• Two years of Occupational Hygiene experience in a mining and/or processing environment.
• Massive mining experience will be advantageous.
• Ability to manage large team of hygienist assistants.
• Ability to operate in larger environment.
• Experience in the compilation, implementation and monitoring performance of an occupational hygiene programme.
• Risk management experience.
• Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s license.
