Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Chief Safety Officer to lead health and safety initiatives for its mining operations in Bloemfontein. This senior role will develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive safety management systems to ensure a secure working environment for all personnel.

You will foster a strong safety culture, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with MHSA and related regulations. A leadership stance and proven expertise in mining safety are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 7 years of health and safety management experience.
• At least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role within mining.
• Solid knowledge of South African mining health and safety legislation (MHSA).
• Proven ability to develop and implement effective safety management systems.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Registered with a professional body (e.g., SAIOSH).

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage the site's Health and Safety Management System in accordance with legal requirements and company standards.
• Conduct regular risk assessments, hazard identification, and incident investigations to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs for all levels of employees and contractors.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations and standards.
• Lead and participate in safety audits and inspections, recommending and implementing corrective actions.
• Promote a proactive safety culture throughout the organization, fostering employee engagement in safety initiatives.
