Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Mine Safety Officer to uphold the highest safety standards at the client’s Tembisa site. Develops and enforces safety protocols, conducts inspections, and promotes a strong safety culture across all personnel.

The role requires 5+ years in mining safety, MHSA knowledge, and strong incident investigation, training, and communication skills to protect workers and ensure regulatory compliance onsite.

Qualifications

• Relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Safety Officer, specifically within the mining industry.
• In-depth knowledge of South African mining health and safety legislation (e.g., MHSA).
• Strong understanding of risk assessment, incident investigation, and emergency response procedures.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with all levels of staff.
• Ability to work effectively on-site in a demanding operational environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor health and safety management systems for mining operations.
• Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Deliver safety training and toolbox talks to site personnel to promote a proactive safety culture.
• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and statistics and advise management on safety performance.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE by all employees and contractors.
