Job summary

Impala Platinum is seeking a Safety Trainer to lead the management of underground training sections under the Mine Health and Safety Act. The role focuses on supervising instructors and trainees to ensure safe operations in a designated underground area.

The candidate should have Grade 12/NQF 4 and at least 3 years of underground development experience, with a medical fitness certificate or ability to obtain one. Preference for candidates meeting the health and safety criteria.

Qualifications

• Must hold Grade 12 or NQF 4.
• Minimum 3 years underground development experience are essential.
• Must be medically fit or able to obtain a medical certificate.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret the Business Plan and allocate resources accordingly.
• Plan production and training targets and ensure measures to achieve them.
• Receive and convey instructions from Training Management on work priorities.
• Supervise crew responsible for installation and maintenance in designated underground area.
• Plan, organise, lead and control activities in mining operations and training processes.
• Coordinate and implement blasting activities and related safety procedures.
• Support underground workings with anchors and support units while handling explosives and accessories.
• Lead the team, plan, allocate and assess their work, ensuring ISO and SETA compliance.

Job description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To take charge of gangs, instructors, and trainees to mine a section of the workings of the mine in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act Regulation 8.1 for training purposes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• Grade 12 or NQF 4 is essential
• 3 years underground development experience is essential
• Valid Medical certificate or medically fit to obtain such a certificate

COMPETENCIES:

• Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to basic health and safety principles in the workplace
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of the causes of Falls Of Ground (FOG)
• Demonstrate knowledge of Symbolic signs
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Platinum Safety Rules
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Mine Health and
• Safety Act, regulations and definitions
• Demonstrate an understanding of legal terms and requirements related to rock breaking operations
• Demonstrate an understanding of the identification of and dealing with rock strata

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

• Read and interpret the Business Plan and allocated resources accordingly
• Plan production/training targets and ensure measures to achieve production/training targets
• Receive and convey instructions from Training Management on work priorities
• Supervise crew responsible for installation and maintenance in designated area underground
• Plan, organise, lead and control activities in the mining operations and training process
• Mark shot and pilot holes for primary and secondary blasting in an underground working place
• Charge shot holes with primed explosives, install initiating systems used in blasting operations underground, store and issue explosives and accessories and destroy old explosives
• Support an underground working place by means of anchors, elongated support units and packs
• Transport material and equipment by means of a mono rope system
• Lead the team, plan, allocate and assess their work
• Coordinates, controls and ensures compliance within the ISO and SETA requirements
• Effectively manages and monitors all HRD systems
