Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Mine Safety Officer in Upington, Northern Cape, focusing on health, safety and environmental management. You will develop policies, implement procedures, conduct inspections, and promote a strong safety culture across the mine.

The ideal candidate will have MHSA knowledge, SAMTRAC, 4+ years in mine safety and environmental management, and the ability to travel to multiple sites. A proactive, collaborative approach is essential to safeguard workers and the environment.

Qualifications

• National Diploma or Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Management, or a related field.
• SAMTRAC or equivalent OHS qualification is essential.
• Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g., SAIOSH).
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in mine safety, health, and environmental management.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant environmental legislation.
• Experience in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
• Strong understanding of occupational hygiene principles and environmental management practices.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
• Proficiency in using safety management software and standard office applications.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mining environment.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to various mine sites within the Northern Cape region.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain safety and environmental management systems.
• Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with regulations.
• Investigate all safety and environmental incidents, near misses, and occupational illnesses, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver safety and environmental training programs to employees and contractors.
• Monitor workplace conditions and ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Advise management on safety, health, and environmental matters.
• Prepare safety and environmental reports for management and regulatory bodies.
• Promote a positive safety culture and encourage employee participation in safety initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with waste management, pollution control, and rehabilitation requirements.
• Maintain records related to safety, health, and environmental performance.
• Stay updated on relevant legislation and industry best practices.
