Job summary

Valterra Platinum is seeking a Mine Overseer based at the Tumela Mine, Thabazimbi, South Africa, to oversee a section of the mining process with accountability under MHSA guidelines. The role emphasizes planning, safe operations, and profitability through best practices and coordinated input from engineering and HR.

The candidate should hold a Mine Overseer Certificate for scheduled mines, a Blasting Certificate, and a valid First Aid Certificate; a Mining Degree/Diploma is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Manage and coordinate mining process planning, prepare and break blocks efficiently and safely
• Delivering quality ore to the ore pass as agreed
• Review and introduce mining best practices to enhance performance
• Negotiate with Engineering Department to source and supply materials
• Provide instructions and supervision to line management and service departments
• Control rosters, sickness, training and leave schedules for adequate resources
• Initiate and monitor operations improvement projects
• Liaise with HR on labour planning and support business planning
• Investigate and report incidents/injuries and take preventative actions

This role is based in Tumela Mine 15 East, Thabazimbi, South Africa

Job Description

The Mine Overseer has the Legal accountability with a 2.14.1 and a 2.13.12 appointment in terms of the MHSA section 26 of 1996. The main responsibility of this role is to ensure that a dedicated section of the operational process operates effectively from a current and future best practice perspective.

The Mine Overseer therefore has the accountability to manage and plan for the development & provision of mining work practices, structures and services, which will contribute to the overall safety, health, and sustained profitability of the Operational Area.

The role of the Mine Overseer is therefore to manage and co-ordinate the following:

• Mining process planning, preparing and breaking predetermined blocks of ground, efficiently and safely.
• Delivering quality ore to the ore pass as agreed.
• Review and introduce mining best practices to enhance performance efficiencies over long term.
• Negotiate with Engineering Department – source and supply determined material to operations.
• Gives appropriate instructions and supervision to line management including service departments to safeguard people, equipment, material and environment against damage, injury or loss.
• Control shift rosters, sickness implications, training and leave schedules to ensure the section is adequately resourced.
• Initiate and monitor operations improvement projects
• Liaison with Human Resources on HR / Labour planning.
• Support overall Business Planning
• Investigates and reports any incidents / injuries.
• Takes pro‑active preventative and corrective action.

This role is in the Mining department at a Band 6/10 level reporting to the Section Manager

Experience required

• At least 5 years mining experience at metalliferous mines
• Trackless Mine Environment Experience
• Mine overseer 2.14.1 plus 2.13.12 appointment

Technical knowledge

• In-depth knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act knowledge
• Valid Driver’s License
• Certificate of Fitness
