Job summary

Shift Pursuit in Cape Town seeks an experienced Professional Mechanical Engineer to lead machine design and engineering analysis for client projects. You will conduct ANSYS simulations, perform FEM, and develop safe, reliable mechanical systems.

You will prepare calculations, drawings, and documentation, mentor junior engineers, ensure compliance with standards, and collaborate with project managers, draughtspersons, and manufacturers to deliver on time and within budget.

Qualifications

• BEng or BSc in Mechanical Engineering.
• Registered with ECSA as PrEng.
• Approximately 10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.

Responsibilities

Introduction:

An established consulting engineering and project management firm is seeking an experienced Professional Mechanical Engineer with strong expertise in machine design and engineering analysis.

Key Performance Areas:

• Design and develop machinery, mechanical systems, components, and equipment in accordance with project and client requirements.
• Use ANSYS to conduct engineering simulations, finite element analysis, and design validation.
• Perform structural, stress, thermal, vibration, and fatigue analyses where required.
• Evaluate and optimise mechanical designs for safety, reliability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
• Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and design documentation.
• Produce and review detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings.
• Select appropriate materials, components, and manufacturing methods for mechanical applications.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, regulations, and client specifications.
• Conduct design reviews and identify potential technical risks or areas for improvement.
• Provide technical guidance and engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, draughtspersons, manufacturers, and other stakeholders.
• Liaise with clients to understand their technical requirements and provide suitable engineering solutions.
• Support manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities where required.
• Monitor project deliverables to ensure that designs are completed within agreed timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
• Mentor and support junior engineers and members of the mechanical design team.
• Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical conduct in accordance with ECSA requirements.

Education and Professional Registration:

• BEng or BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professionally registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer (PrEng).
• Approximately 10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.

Technical Experience:

• Extensive experience in machine design and mechanical equipment development.
• Strong working knowledge of ANSYS software.
• Experience conducting finite element analysis and engineering simulations.
• Ability to perform structural, stress, thermal and fatigue analyses.
• Sound understanding of engineering materials, manufacturing processes and mechanical design principles.
• Experience developing and reviewing detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Proficiency in relevant mechanical design and 3D CAD software.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical decision-making abilities.
• Excellent communication, teamwork and project coordination skills.
